Dr. McDougall at The USDA Great Nutrition Debate

Dr. McDougall speaking at The Great Nutrition Debate that was funded by the USDA back in February 20, 2000. The debate features speakers (from left to right) such as Dr. John McDougall, Dr. Robert Atkins, Dr. Barry Sears, Dr. Denise E. Bruner, Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr.Morrison C. Bethea, Dr. Keith T. Ayoob, and a small presentation by Dr. Eric Westman.

Dr. McDougall states that a starch based diet is the diet of the human being. He argues that man-kind has survived on a diet that consisted of diet centered around cooked starches with the addition of fruits and vegetables. When people ate rich foods like meat and dairy it would have been on special occasions, unlike society today who make these things a staple in their diet.

I thought the debate was very spirited and entertaining but did not find the low-carb argument very convincing or backed up with scientific evidence published in peer-reviewed journals. Their point that carbs cause too much insulin to be produce is hypocritical since animal based foods cause an even HIGHER production of the hormone to be produced. Eating lots of cholesterol and saturated fat AKA meat and dairy has been shown to cause heart disease. Research is ALSO showing that eating a plant-based diet can PREVENT & REVERSE heart disease even in it's later stages. One thing most people can agree with is eating less processed carbs and more fruits and vegetables ;)

The three fundamentals for sustaining a long and healthy life is getting enough water, sugar, and sleep DAILY! Once that is established, getting some sunshine and sport during the week will make you go even further. A plant-based diet consisting of at least 80% of calories from carbohydrates will give you the edge you need to reach your potential. Go Vegan; for the people, for the animals, for the planet.

Dr McDougall must be eating a paleo diet and Sears and Atkins must be eating a starch base diet because if carbs make you fat sears and atkins are fat therefore the must be eating a starch base diet and Dr McDougall is thin therefore he must be eating a paleo Meat diet, right?  Good day I would rather be thin than fat. I like carbs and I am still waitng to get fat on them.

Wish there was a debate lecture between Dr. McDougal (plant based/whole food)and Dr. Ekberg (keto) They seem to be preaching the exact opposites? How can 2 intelligent highly trained physicians study facts in front of their eyes, and reach opposite conclusions!???

I used to think extra virgin olive oil was good for you..so good that I ate 21 tablespoons mixed with my vegan food.

I gained 22lbs.

Without all that crap oil and eating a starch based, plant based diet with lots of white rice I weigh 150lbs instead of 172lbs.

One tablespoon of any oil contains 120 calories and 14 grams of fat.

It doesn't make one as full as 120 calories of rice, so with oils and fats we are on the road to diabetes and overweight.

There is evidence linking high fat consumption with diabetes. It is a risk factor for certain.

This is bullshit, people get fat because they combine carbohydrates and fats in big quantities. the body cannot use the fat for fuel nor access the fat reserves as easily if the individual is consuming too much carbs. Why? Because this puts the body in a carbohydrate metabolism, making it carbohydrate dependent....but when the body is running of carbs(glucose), it cannot also run on fats(switch from carbohydrate metabolism to a ketogenic(fat fueled) metabolism). Please understand the scientific data we currently have. Also CVD's have not been shown to increase with higher fat consumption, it was actually the same as people eating lower fat....the thing they did find was a higher overall mortality rate among the group with the lower cholesterol levels!
