Trying to use the first iPod, too many years later

The first iPod is 18 years old- and I picked one up a bit ago. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it wasn't as easy to get it up and running as a modern device, so in this video let's go over the steps necessary to make the iPod completely usable!

My seven year old found my 4th gen iPod, charged it up, and has been listening to 4, 000 songs that I loaded the thing up with 14 years ago.

"I don't own any songs on iTunes"

yes yes, we were definitely all paying for the music we put on our first gen ipods.

Think about this: There were 22 years between the releases of the Sony Walkman and the iPod.
There are 18 years between the release of the iPod to now.
This means that, in the year 2023 (in 3 and a half years time) *the iPod would be as old to us as the Walkman was when the iPod came out.*

This also works for Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)

You’ll need:
-FireWire 400 to 800 cable
-FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter
-Thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 adapter

Voila! iPod!

He said "quirks and features..." and drove a Mustang in the video. Must be a Doug Demuro fan!

i can't tell you how groundbreaking the first iPod was when it came out. What was more impressive was the first "in-ear" earphone they made you buy separately. Thanks for working so hard making this video, really brought back some memories. This thing single-handedly killed the mini-disc player.

I recently found my old iPod 5GB and it still works. Battery holds still for some hours. It's a great pleasure to use it today.

i had one of these. it was a life changer. the thing had like 2gb (or 1.5?) of space. so much music you could jam in there...before i used to walk around with a god damn diskman and like 20 CDs in my backpocket. i get so nostalgic just seeing it (i even remember the exact font it used for the display like it was yesterday )

Heck, I still use my iPod Mini (made 2004). Most AWESOME MP3 player ever created. Easy to fix, play, and Linuxed (Rockboxed) it. Absolutely love it, and wouldn't use anything else.

The original was a couple years past my time. I remember in grade 8 when iPods were getting big but a lot of people still had MP3 players of other companies before apple took over the entire market. Some people in my class had the iPod mini which was huge, the shuffle and one or two of the rich kids were lucky enough to get the iPod nano for Christmas during the year it was first released.

Im sitting here during quarantine2020 and just thought, hm I wonder what the first ipod was like. And here I am having that question answered in an entertaining and informative fashion. What a time to be alive!

Excellent job. I’ve got a Classic 160GB 6th Gen. First Apple product I got, got it just before the iPad 4th Gen and iPhone 5. Still works well, seven years later. Battery life is a bit rubbish, but I mainly have it docked into a hifi with an old 30 pin connector onboard. I always preferred the Classic over the other iPods. Storage means more songs. And high quality as well. Kinda got superseded when my iPhone storage matched and surpassed its storage. But still, an absolute gem of a device.

My dad has an iPod from the early 2000’s and he used it as recently as a few years ago.

He has so many metal/rock songs on there it’s insane because he’d just have it plugged into his car and we’d jam out to every song.
