I remember when I started Reception in September when I was 4. I was only 4 for the beginning of the year, then I was 5 for the rest of the year, once I had my birthday, as my birthday is in October. However it was different when I started school. Most students started at 4 while very few students started at 5.

September to December babies started in January at 5 years old

January to April babies started in May at 5 years old

May to August babies started in September at 5 years old when the rest of their class peers were already in Year 1

My nephew started school in 2019 in Reception when he was 4 because that option of starting at 5 was no longer allowed anymore and his birthday is in May so he would be a year behind for most of the year. He is now 6 going into Year 2.

A girl, who was the year below me at school and her birthday is in November or December, told me that she was 7 to 8 in Year 2. Year 2 children are 6 to 7. She could only have been 7 to 8 in Year 2 if she started Reception at 5 in January because then she would have finished the year at 6. But she didn’t because I remember she started Reception at the same time I started Year 1.
