Scientists say it's a matter of when, not if, there will be a major earthquake in the New Madrid seismic zones.

I was in a a truck stop in New Madrid yesterday. I asked the girl about the famous earthquake. She had absolutely no idea what I was talking about

The problem with trying to evacuate from a major quake there is that the zone of destruction, bridges down, roads broken up; is going to be hundreds of miles across. Sedimentary deposits are subject to liquifaction and roads may cease to exist, buildings may crumble into the streets. It is better to be prepared with a couple of months of food and the means to purify water for 2 or 3 months and a portable, weather proof shelter, than to depend on being able to "bug out".

Last earthquake had 1200 aftershocks over two months. Sand blows, lakes suddenly disappearing, and the Mississippi. Some people couldn’t take it so they just ran away. Left everything behind and just walked or ran away.

It wasn’t 1895 the mega quake New Madrid is known for was in 1811-1812 bc there were months of aftershocks.

I had many years living with Calif quakes, and 3 yrs hospital grant fund apps including for New Madrid fault medical emergency education. Mild quakes (<6.0) are easy to ride out. It's generally better to stay inside away from windows and glass in a stronger structured area. If in a door jam, the door may swing closed. Things can fall (ie books, vases, pictures, dressers, bookcases, etc). Strong quakes (>6.0) can cause brick to crumble, power lines to fall, dikes to open up, water or gas lines may break, roads to crack, bridges could become unstable or collapse. If driving, you may not notice a mild one, but in a strong one, pull over in a safe place and ride it out in your vehicle.

Remember that aftershocks usually follow for a few days. Expect them, respect them.

After quake, check that everyone's safe and uninjured. If any smell of gas exit at once, turn off gas at the main shutoff.

Prepare as for power outages: water, radio, charged batteries, medical supplies, prescription meds, etc. Predetermine where the family will meet. Have a contact out of area each family member can check in with in case connections are spotty. Keep a backpack in vehicles with some emergency supplies.

Most important... Remain calm.

Why aren’t they mentioning the gas and oils wells on the fault line

I attended a FEMA class on the New Madrid Fault. The terminus of the fault line is Cincinnati. The bridge over the Mississippi River in memphis is moving. The near shore abutment is moving north and the west abutment is moving south! I hope we never relive 1811-12 event.

it's to bad that someone couldn't build a series of earthquake simulator type rooms around the country so that people can make an appointment to stop in and spend an hour experiencing various types of quakes in a very controlled environment so they would know what it feels like so they will be much better prepared for when the BIG ONE hits...it won't be such a shock...no pun intended

Every home should be prepped and ready to take care of themselves for a couple of weeks...minimum

In 1811 the mississippi ran backwards for a few days. New Madrid is so mighty it created the mississippi. The loss of life and property in the St Louis area would be staggering were this to occur today.

Fyi...law of triangles...I saw a woman duck under furniture in center of room. Move towards walls and strong structures because collapse will happen in center of rooms where there is no support.

Do you remember practicing earthquake drills in school as a kid? Another neat thing is all the gold that is still hidden in the fault lines or fissures.

Don't relyon the GOVERNMENT to come save you. Food, water, shelter backups. Hand held HAM radios, as Cell phones WILL fail, and own and professionally train with a firearm. All are absolutely necessary.

I live in central Indiana and I have felt quakes from the New Madrid fault about 3 times in my life time. One of them I was at my job at Community Hospital Indianapolis and all of a sudden the lights and power went off and my computer started to rock back and forth. So folks this is real and if we ever get a big one look out.

Sad that a university has to take this on instead of state and local governments.

Updates on phones? What are the odds that if it serious enough to require evacuation the cell towers will still be functional?

Glad to hear you're trying to deal with this. At least you have a better chance than St Louis.
