Central US: 7.7 Earthquake Simulation in REAL TIME

Показать описание
During the winter of 1811-12, the New Madrid area was shaken by a series of the most powerful earthquakes in U.S history, largest being a magnitude 8.1 on the Richter scale. This simulation is an attempt to recreate the shaking effects in different major cities of a similar scenario that could repeat sometimes in the next 200 - 300 years.

I hope these simulations will bring more earthquake awareness around the world and educate the general public about potential earthquake related hazards. Remember that earthquakes can be catastrophic, however climate change is 100x TIMES worse... I do also hope that my videos will inspire a younger generation of architects, engineers and scientists!

Welcome to the world’s largest and only 3D earthquake simulation channel on YouTube! My channel focuses on realistic 3D earthquake simulations of a variety of virtual structures and types of buildings from around the world. Some of my work has been featured by various international media news outlets and it has also been used by other large YouTube channels such as GeologyHub, GeoPop and CaSeismograph for educational purposes. This channel’s content has also been featured on the Curiosity Channel in a recent documentary called “Breakthrough: Forecasting the Big One”.

The simulations that I post serve an educational purpose and should be solely treated as such. We should not forget that earthquakes are real world events that can sometimes lead to loss of properties and lives.

The blue expanding wave represents the P wave, less destructive - and the red wave represents the S wave - most destructive.

The earthquake in the early 1800s made the Mississippi River flow backwards for three days.

I woke up this morning after waking from dreaming of this horrible earthquake that occured here where I live & the house I am at. So dreadful & scary ! Slow motion as allowing me to see it very vividly. It wasn't as though there was shaking to it, rather, the earth was rising & lowering just like waves of the Sea. The home here is large, it was causing the house to break & burst apart, the counter cabinets were seperating & raising off floor at each end about 3 ft, as the house riased & lowered - frightening !!! I told my sister, we got to get out of here ! Woke up.
I live in Southeast Indiana near the New Madrid Faultline.

It’s really cool seeing how you’ve been building up to this video! I loved seeing the other videos in here. Puts a lot of perspective of just how widespread this earthquake would have.

I live 45 minutes north of Louisville, KY.
In my part of Southern Indiana, the entire tri-county area or greater would fall straight into the abyss, because the whole area lies atop massive cave systems.

This is the size of the 1811 quake, back when the region had a few thousand people spread across the same area. I've read that scientists think the area is due for a 6.7-6.8 quake in the next century. And while that sounds a lot less than this one, that's the same strength as the 1987 San Francisco quake that collapsed a freeway, broke the Bay Bridge and destroyed half the Mission District, in an area that is actually prepared for quakes.
I live in Springfield, Illinois. Most of our housing is wood framed, so those should do okay. Our downtown, however, is mostly masonry. Two of our three tallest buildings are steel-framed and so is the newer construction like our hospitals. But the state capitol, governor's mansion and the rest of downtown are all masonry, most of it unreinforced. Not to mention the earth-fill dam that holds the city's water supply and the freeway interchanges surrounding us. We'd be in deep shit if and when this happens.

December 1812 a quake hit offshore of Santa Barbara that generated a tsunami that is said to have sent a ship inland to a local canyon and then back out to sea.
The aftershocks were so bad and frequent that the priests at the Ventura mission abandoned the site until April 1813. That mission is about 400 yards from the beach

When we see the intensities I can give some perspective as someone who has ridden some rather notable earthquakes. The most recent was the Ridgecrest earthquakes. The big one of those was a 7.1 but I was far enough for it to be in the green range of V for local intensity.

It was no joke. At all. A bigger earthquake means that the milder shaking goes on longer. There is a big difference between having a 5.0 right underneath you and having a 7.7 some distance away where it feels like a 5.0. That one underneath you will be over in a few seconds. The one further away will shake you for what feels like five minutes.

Ironic seeing as the eclipse next month goes right over this fault...Some are expecting due to that and the planet alignments that it will disrupt the normal inactivity. If so I'm concerned

I'm about 450 miles away from the New Madrid fault zone and tbh this video is a real eye opener! It was scary but informative. Always remember TIP
T- teach I- instruct P- practice/prepare
Teach- learn about what to do during earthquakes /natural disasters
Instruct- show others what they should do during an earthquake/natural disaster
Practice- practice what you learned on a regular basis so you know what to do during an earthquake/natural disast

You should do one about the Basel earthquake that happened between France and Switzerland

Man the ammount of damage that would do is scary. The West coast that usually gets these are built to be resistant to earthquakes the midwest is not. Scary amount of damage.

This is a great demo. Sorry to say it, but I'd like to see one that's reflective of the damage an 1811 type quake would have on modern infrastructure. Again, kudos on a powerful demo.

Gives new meaning to intraplate earthquakes when you see this intensity and spread.

My son who is now 8 dreamed at age 4 of a massive earthquake that made our house crack down middle, he said I was holding our baby and he was crying in the dream. At that time I didn’t think I could even have another baby. Here I am holding my baby in my living room wandering if my kid had a dream that predicted the future…I live near St. Louis Missouri to top it off…

What I can’t understand is this all of these areas have had earthquakes from the new Madrid earthquake fault which they say now can give a 8.5 magnitude quake, which is far more powerful than a 7.7 earthquake if the cities known as it had happened in the 1800s these cities and states don’t have earthquake building codes because that happens that is releaseda magnitude of a 8.5 or 8.0 on the Richter scale millions will die and several states around they need to upgrade the building codes now built a buildings and retrofit their buildings and bridges while they’re still time if there is much time left at all
