Introduction to Electron Configurations

An introduction to how to write electron configurations. In order to write the electron configurations using the configuration chart we first need to know the number of electrons for the each atom. When we write the configuration we'll put these electrons in orbitals around the nucleus of the atom.

But why are they needed? Why write out all these shells when u can just draw the spheres, or just write He, N, Ag, ect.? I understand the basics of How to write them out, but it doesn't seem to stick if I don't have a reason for doing it... thanks for posting
