Most narcissists I've encountered are acutely aware that they have a problem. Some believe they might be bipolar, while others have more education and they know they have many traits of NPD. Some are proud of it, while others seem to feel shame about it. Sometimes it depends on what mood they're in, as they vacillate between bragging about it and feeling shame about it.

Very true the man I was seeing had very high narcissistic traits and I once told him there is a word for someone like you and he said I’m aware it’s called narcissist and he was very proud while saying it too might I add

It probably depends on where they fall on the spectrum. I listened to Dr Kernberg say that it depends on how strong their defenses are. Otherwise you might have an opposite reaction to therapy. Some might walk away.

I'd always want to know, if it was suspected, that I had a particular condition or an illness.
I go with the theory that knowledge is power.
It was very helpful when I was diagnosed with BPD as it made it easier to understand myself and my difficult behaviour.

It’s very helpful, albeit shocking, when someone explains this to you in a professional setting for the first time. Denial may prevent the information from immediately sinking in - but it eventually does. Such an eye opener! It was as if the therapist had lived in my home - everything that was so wonky in my relationship explained by a complete stranger! 😮 I finally had the knowledge I needed to make better choices in my life regarding my relationships with my husband, my family & friends (flying monkeys).

Frame it as you have… a diagnosis rather than you are a diagnosis.

Low level narcissists, borderlines or thin skinned subtypes are very aware of their problems. High level, thick skinned subtypes manage better in life. At least generally speaking.

I watched the full interview which was great. But he doesn’t say what psycho-educational materials he recommends. Could you please ask him what specifically he’d suggest a person should read at that stage?

One thing I cannot recommend enough is taking a gander at _A Generational Pathology: Narcissism Is Not Grandiosity_ by The Last Psychiatrist (TLP). Search it and read, but *do be warned* that TLP's writing can be pretty jarring.

Another short piece worth looking at: _The Ego Epidemic: How More and More of us Women Have an Inflated Sense of our Own Fabulousness_ by Lucy Taylor. Daily Mail was kind enough to put it up (which doesn't really say too much about DM, unfortunately) over a decade ago. Still worth it today, though.

Edited to add: nothing revelatory here; I'm sure the pieces are fairly consonant with what Igor's experience with the pathology is like professionally and how he would describe its effects upon others.

Some don't know they are narcs cos of inability to reflect. Some know and enjoy the twisted power & control it gives them over their victims.

Yes we know much before any diagnosis..

What about a covert that just realized it all at once? Do you even spot them?

Empathy is what makes us human. Be careful because narcs can feign it.

Also, most everyone in a power position at a company is a narcissist. That’s how they got there

If you’re not being honest as an adult medical professional treating an adult, that’s wildly unhelpful

The narcissist probably would never go to a therapist!

Lots of narcissists think themselves has ADHD. They just don’t want to see that ADHD people won’t psychologically emotionally abuse others like they do. They also don’t want to see that they are extremely self fish and self centered, they do everything to serve themselves. ADHD won’t show these traits other than can’t focus on one thing and can be destructive for following orders and rules.
