Basic Skills!: Basic Soldering

Check out part 3 of our basic skills videos! Today we will be covering basic soldering skills!

Most repairs require you to have basic tools like a screw driver or a spudger and others might involve more exciting tools like a soldering iron. Soldering is a method of connecting two pieces of metal together by melting another filler metal in between them. Don’t let those repairs scare you off because today I’m going to show you the basics of soldering.

You rushed the most important part. Did you touch the solder to the iron or the opposite side of the wire you were soldering?

If I was doing this soldering job I would Tin the tip of the soldering iron, and the contacts.  That way you get a good joint and you don't use too much solder.

I think I banged my wireless adapter, and the port part of the usb disconnected from the mother board( 4 metal looking lines), I know u need to solder but not sure which ones broke.

At 00.45, the problem with those Helping Hands devices is that the base is too small and too light, it probably wouldn't hold that circuit board very well without tipping over as soon as you tried to solder to it. Glue it (use epoxy) to a piece of wood or a larger piece of metal, the base should be larger in diameter and much heavier.

I highly recommend the Pace series of instructional videos on how to solder. Do a youtube search for paceworldwide Basic Soldering Lessons. They are somewhat dated but are still quite relevant.

What is a "spudger"? Also, soldering should definitely not generate Sparks! Spatters perhaps, but no sparks, unless the device is still plugged in or you didn't drain the filter capacitors before

The joint should be shinny too. Examples of bad joints would have being nice. :/
