Gander airport was the busiest in the 50's because at the time, transatlantic flights needed to stop in Gander to fill up on fuel to complete their flight.

Thanksgiving in Canada is celebrated in October because it celebrates the harvest, not the breaking of bread between the Pilgrims and Natives.

There is a reason a Canadian invented the trivial pursuit game. We love obscure facts and figures.

Yes, Canadian Thanksgiving predates US Thanksgiving and dates back to 1579. It began as a feast to celebrate a successful expedition in the Canadian north. Over time it morphed into a celebration of the harvest.

Lentil is a staple crop for around half the planet. They grow quick and are power packed nutrition especially protein.Blueberries and related fruit grow wild pretty much everywhere in Canada including parts of the Canadian Tundra. Huckleberries are a related species as well as Saskatoon and Gooseberrie.

One unsurprising fact about Canada is that we are so popular, American trolls will bombard the comments section out of jealous rage, insecurity and envy.

1: Another story I remember about Canadian soldiers is from WWII, where the Allies decided they wanted to break through the German lines in one spot. What they did was they made a big show of moving the Canadians from that spot, something like 12 miles down the line, forcing the Germans to take a lot of their troops from where the Canuks were to follow them (there were troops from other Allied nations there too). Then, the night before the attack, the Canadians hiked (yes, on foot) back to where they had just came from, under cover of darkness, carrying everything they would need the next day. Then in the morning, even though they had been awake all night, they still helped to punch through the German lines without much trouble.
2: Canada also has (by a MASSIVE margin) the longest ocean coastline in the world. Out of the total of 356, 000 km for the entire world, Canada has 202, 080 km of them (about 60%).
3: The Canadian flag is the ONLY country flag that is an exact 2:1 ratio. Also, the red sides are also a perfect 2:1 and if you fold them over the white centre you will have a perfect square.
4: Canada has lakes bigger than a lot of countries. In fact, Lake Winnipeg (the largest of Manitoba's 100 THOUSAND lakes and only 5th largest in Canada) is bigger than the fifty smallest countries.

You should look into the story of the Avro Arrow. It was an advanced (for its time) military aircraft developed and built in Canada back in the 50s. When the program was canceled many of the engineers, designers, and workers ended up in the USA working for Boeing, McDonald Douglas, Northrup Grumman, and NASA.

I have a great obscure fact to share, with you.

From 1973 to 2022, Canada was engaged in war with Denmark, over a border dispute. YES! We once shared a land border with a country other than America. In between Greenland and Ellesmere Island, is a small island called Hans Island. 1973 UN resolution led to the delimit of the continental shelf, leading to a land border through the middle of Hans Island.

In 1984, Canadian soldiers landed on the island, planted a Canadian flag and left behind a bottle of whisky. The next year, the Danish Minister of Greenland Affairs came to the island himself later the same year with the Danish flag, a bottle of Schnapps, and a letter stating "Welcome to the Danish Island". This went back and forth, every year, making it one of the longest-running border wars in global history. Known better as 'The Whisky War'.

Saskatchewan is also one province that does not observe daylight saving time. Oh I wish other provinces would follow suit.

Regarding Gander being the busiest airport for a short period. It has to do with the engine technologies and planes. Before the jet engine you would have to stop in Gander to refuel to do a transatlantic flight so every flight that was going from anywhere in North America to anywhere in Europe had to stop in Gander in order to get fuel to make the crossing. Gander was also the largest airport on Earth for a period of time. But the Advent of the jet engine and larger fuel capacity put an end that status. Jet engines allowed flights to fly directly without having to stop for fuel.

Ernie Coombs (Mr Dressup) came up to Canada with Fred Rogers to create a television show for children with (I believe) the CBC. The show didn’t work out, and Fred Rogers went back to the U.S. to try to produce a show there, and would eventually create “Mr Roger’s neighbourhood”

Ernie Coombs decided to stay and his second attempt at a show, Mr. Dressup worked.

He did become a Canadian citizen in the 90s (I believe dual citizenship).

As a Long Islander, New Yorker, I love the country of Canada. I even know some stuff about Canada.

1. Canada gives us Pineapple Pizza.

2. Canada gave us Maple Syrup

3. Keanu Reeves, Mark McKinney, Dave Foley, Micheal J. Fox, Kevin McDonald, and Bruce McCulloch are all from Canada.

4. Canada also invented Lacrosse
