Thanks to Lookers Land Rover West London, I finally get my hands on the new Land Rover Defender. Being a huge fan of the 'old' shape Defender, I've been apprehensive about getting behind the wheel of this new car.

Want to know where to get great music for videos? I get all of mine here:

The quality of this channel remains extremely high. Just a joy to watch. Sam comes across as a great guy that I'd love to drink a beer with and chat cars. Keep it up, Sam!

Sam, I think you need to come to terms with the fact that Land Rover have given up on the traditional (agricultural) market - The Japanese stole that a long while ago with 4x4 Pick-ups which were far more reliable and were difficult to break. If you look at the last few years of the (old) Defender market place, they were all specc'd-up to the eyeballs with 'outdoor kit' so that they could safely cruise the mean streets of they were stolen due to crap security measures!)
This car is very much aimed at these urbanites and those who (quite rightly) detest the fifth version of the Discovery.
Disco 5 is dead in the water now that this car is launched

I thought I was going to go head over heels for the Defender. I'm a huge fan of LR since the Ford sured them up. What I learned is that I don't mind spending the money on luxury, but these Wrangler/Gladiator people who are spending $50-60k+ on rugged beaters are insane. The "status" trend is dumb. Get something for your money. Now pardon me while I go and spec my Bronco to over $50k to get it max ready to race over and sand dunes, and I'll never race over sand dunes.

I believe that Sam has talked himself into buying a new defender lol

I quite like that you can spec it with steel wheels so that certain people in the family don't keep curbing the alloys.

“Yuppie country folk” and driving down Kings Road was already a big part of the old Defender hence the existence of companies like Twisted and Urban.

It deserves so much more than a life of school runs and lunch dates

Love the new Defender as a car, it’s comfortable and it’s as capable as any other Land Rover. But, at that price, it ain’t a defender to me.

I think you're spot on— this car will be bought by yuppy families. In other words, it's really the new and improved Discovery.

Base spec 3 door for me with the steel wheels. Think I’d probably still steer around puddles though lol 😂

The name “Freelander” seems a better choice in it’s availability for the vehicles target market & audience. While suspending the use of the name Defender .As the Grenadier fills the gap Old Defender left

As someone who has lived in the highlands for their entire lives, the locals who have had old defenders in the past will be moving to more conventional pickups and the new defenders seen in the highlands will be wealthy city folk who go to their holiday home in the highlands once a year. Or prehaps again wealthy people southerners who retire for the so called ‘rugged highland lifestyle’. It’s a shame but in truth its probably the reality.

Another reason I love Sam is that we’re not seeing the same 30mins of regurgitated spec lists for the T50. What relief.

If you owned an older defender (like myself) and doubt the new defender, Go and drive one.

Let's be honest, the car could not have been the same exact car as the old Defender (sorry Defender enthusiasts). This is primarily due to CO2 emissions and regulations. However, even though I loved the old defender, I do accept change and if I could I would have a Defender 90 in all black, with the smallest rims and offroad tires and with the front row extra optional seat, please! Also, the 3.0L engine seems to be more than adequate although a 2.0L hybrid used in the Range Rover P400e would have been more environmentally friendly. Hope we can agree Sam! As ever, excellent video! Keep up the great work and we will continue to follow :)

Personally I love the new defender, however it is roughly the same price as a discovery. So in a way the same car in different clothes.
If I found a new defender on my driveway, I wouldn’t be upset.
