Before I gave up on the author, the first sex scene in her Throne of Glass series described a penis as "velvet-wrapped steel" and. I've never forgotten that one. It's so fucking bad. And apparently she reuses that phrase again later in this series and just why. please no.

The lesson I took from Twilight (a book and movie series I enjoyed with my mother and friends, then jumped on the hate bandwagon against, then made peace with it) is that we all have our own personal Trash. For me now, it's chinese gay romance novels. You just have to find yours.

god you are so on point about the fixation on the 'spiciness' of these books and others like it lmaoooo. i also notice that a lot of these books fixate a lot on the girl or woman in question being a virgin or having no experience next to a man who has a lot (implausibly so in some cases). i think a lot of people who are very sexually repressed tend to gravitate to these books rather than just see sex as a normal part of a lot of people's lives.

You encapsulate my feelings about this book so well! I tried to read it last winter because I war curious what the hype was about, and I also dnf-ed it just before the midway point because I felt like NOTHING was going on. I read it together with my partner, and neither of us could even sum up what the most recent chapter we had read was about, it was so bad. And this comes from a person who managed to read the fifth Twilight book :D I fully agree with everything you said. It was just too bad in so many ways, couldn't stomach that book. Thank you for making me laugh along with you!

I only tried to read it because it was featured so prominently on Amazon’s best fantasy books page. I went in completely blind.

I was so excited at the beginning! There was this cool hunter girl doing her best against the odds, and she killed a wolf! That was cool!

…and then she just gets taken to the Fae??? I was so confused until I read the reviews and realized it was somehow Beauty and the Beast????

Also I want to write a parody Romantasy called A Bowl of Mac and Cheese :)

ngl, the hype around ACOTAR (and really, the entire erotica boom going on) reminds me a lot of when 50 Shades first dropped. people were equal parts scandalized and enthralled by a "sexy" book series that was objectively mediocre. it's like part of what draws folks to reading these books is just the opportunity to pearl-clutch about the contents? idk, i didn't understand it back then and i still don't even now.

anyways, thanks for breaking down why you dnf'd! i appreciate the time you took to really delve in to what about this book didn't work.

Thank you for being considerate and sensible (as always), for not blindly calling the author a zionist, it seems there's a wave now of "canceling" authors just on the ground that they are jewish, and it's really upsetting. Overall, thank you for your content, some of the best books I've read were recommended by you on this channel. And I started watching Star Trek for the most part thanks to you!
