Why Would You Hike Yosemite Half Dome IN THE RAIN!?!??!

I am an very highly trained and experienced climber, and during my career in the Marine Corps, I was an instructor at the Mountain Wafare Center at Pickle Meadows in California. I ALWAYS check the weather report for a few days in advance before I start a climb. And no, you cannot ever predict rapid changes in weather. However these two knew that rain was in the forecast, but still decided to make the trek. This is truly tragic in every way possible, but I also believe that was preventable as well.... My deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends.

This sucks so much. They were in immediate danger when the first drops hit. That granite when it gets wet becomes a slip and slide.
And why weren't you wearing or have tethers available?

Yosemite needs to remove the cables and all hardware and return this to a mountain climbing route, anywhere cables, chains, wooden plank are provided, yields a false sense of security, especially when trying to persuade hikers that they can be mountain climbers.

Is it just me, or does this guy seem way too calm for someone who lost his daughter to a fall off of Half Dome?! As a father of 3 daughters, I’d be absolutely broken to have witnessed such a freak accident occur in front of me. Does anyone know if he was investigated at all? Just saying…

As a father and protector he seems pretty unfazed....

Jonathan Rohloff said a ranger told them storms were in the forecast, and they did see clouds at times. But the sky was clear when they reached the cables, and atop the summit there were panoramic views — until thunder boomed.

Silly, Silly, Silly. They were warned and disobeyed!

There is nothing wrong with the cables. It’s hard to forecast thunderstorms. They can form without much notice especially in the late afternoons. If you want to be extra careful bring grip gloves, wear proper shoes and bring safety cables in case you slip.

Those cables are made to be used with a climbing harness, to clip onto the cables. Most people don't bother, sadly.

I hope it gets thoroughly investigated

A wooden plank every foot? How about prep and heed the conditions. Clip in, don’t play with weather conditions, know your limitations

After seeing video of what she fell from. it's Irresponsible of the park service to even allow people to do this.. It is a false sense of safety by installing the wood slats and hand rails!!

Is it me, or does this Father seem not very upset about this?
