It's not very well explained in the video but the reason why rain is dangerous is because there is moss that grows on the rocks which is fine when dry but when it gets wet it turns slippery as though it was covered in oil or ice making it 10x more dangerous even to just walk on. That is why you shouldn't hike or climb in the rain in places where there are no trees.

I couldn’t finish watching this. To that father… all my love and admiration.
I’ll hug my adult daughter this week.

I don’t know how he’s even doing this interview right now because I would not be able to breathe if this happened to my child.

I can’t imagine watching your daughter fall to her death. What a helpless feeling, strong dude to get on camera and do an interview.

I am very saddened by this. I myself struggled on this very same climb as I was descending just prior to a small rainstorm. It was a very hairy situation. I still remember my concerns about the descent 30 years later.

As a father myself, I cannot imagine the loss.

This is so sad. My 14 year old cousin slipped and passed while we were doing a walk in bullhead city Arizona. It took me a good 10 minutes to get down to him, and by then there was nothing we could do. That was decades ago, and I didn’t go more than 10 feet above lake level the rest of my visits out there. My grandparents who live there died of broken hearts within 5 years of the accident. They felt responsible, as did I for many years. It took me years to accept that it was just a misstep

I’ve done that hike a few times, but never in the rain. Absolutely heartbreaking. So devastating to listen to this grieving father. 🙏

I went to one of my good friends grown daughter's funeral this weekend. She was utterly devastated. No parent should ever bury their child. I don't know how he copes. Prayers to the family

I went to high school with the father and my heart breaks for him! I’ve also hiked Half Dome and know how treacherous it can be going up and coming down. I can’t even imagine trying to attempt to do this in the rain, knowing how slick that rock gets. I’m so sorry for your loss Jon.

As someone who's hiked half dome, you know how slippery and steep it is on the way up. Just about every edition of the yosemite paper tells you what to do should you get caught in a rain storm amidst a summit. Which is - stay put and let it pass. Most rain in the sierras during the summer pass through in a couple of hrs, if not less than an hour. Bring a torch/headlamp with you as emergency backup and layers of clothes. If you're an avid or beginner hiker, this is common knowledge.
