Cheap bike mods that Work!! Suspension fork, Hydraulic brakes

It was time for my ultra cheap mountain bike to get a few much needed upgrades. The Ozark Trail Ridge is an entry level mountain bike from Walmart but it has the ability to be upgraded easily. Follow along as I switch out from the SR Suntour for to a RockShox Judy. I also ditch the cable actuated disc brakes for a set of Shimano mt201 hydraulic units. See how the install goes, and hang around for a legit Mountain bike session to see how they perform.

Part of the reason the OTR is so popular is because you can upgrade it with used parts that came off a $4, 000 bike! The mt200 brakes were my second mod (after pedals) for $50 new. Got a slightly used dropper post setup for $60. Got a slightly used air boost taper steerer fork for $40, and re-laced the front wheel with a $20 hub and $10 headset race. Now that the video is over, I can finish putting it back together so I can go do a ride tomorrow after work! Thanks again Dave, for getting me to buy this bike. Been riding it every weekend for the last three months!

As a store owner/worksop and Shimano educated Mech i love watching to see the thought process of an insanely extraordinary fabricator working on bikes. Makes me wanna ride more and build even more because of the pure joy and fun Dave is having!

I’ve been a MTB forever and I’m stoked to see off-roaders build bike’s

I just bought my first mountain bike. Man these things have changed since I rode BMX's as a kid. It's great learning stuff about how bikes work while watching my favourite 4x4 fabrication channel. Feels like multitasking.

Glad to see someone from your background hop onto an MTB. Also, watching you not bother using a guide when cutting the steerer tube made my anxiety shoot up.

I will say, I'm very pleased that as a new rider from a truck-building background you're NOT running the largest volume/tread tires possible. I see it so often with people getting into the sport. 2.6" tires, downhill casing, only to ride flat trails and wonder why they hate it. The faster rolling XC tires are more fun on a hardtail.

I’m a Car Guy and I’m glad you’re using real terms for these components rather than the bike terms.

I love this series; I know the car stuff gets more views, but I really like the low-buck bike upgrades. The cycling community can be a place where people think anything under $3000 is crap, and you are proving you can have a great time on a budget.

Love this content Dave!
Keep it coming.
Just a friendly suggestion from an old bike wrench…but when you lay your bike down on the ground, try to lay it on the brake rotor side. Laying it down on the drive side can sometimes bend the rear derailleur hangar and cause shifting issues. Happens more than you’d think. Maybe not as big of a deal with your current derailleur, but when you replace it with a better one, you’ll definitely want to keep it straight 👍🏼

I appreciate this so much. You bought a good base bike, put quality parts, where it counts, and ended up with a really nice bike. This is my philosophy on so many things. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful weather and scenery for a ride. Good work Dave and don't be deterred you are awesome! People will still support other endeavors and tinkering is tinkering no matter the rig.

Man I love the mountain bike series you are doing. I've actually done the same thing to Walmart bikes. It's amazing how far you can really take them.

Reminds me how folks were buying cheap Mongoose Fatbikes at MallWart a decade ago and hotrodding them into fun, dependable bikes for a fraction of the cost of a Surly.

Keep throwin' down Dave! I love your bike vids

I love balanced budget upgrades. I build my cars like that and go balls to the walls with bikes!

Cool to see people tinkering and riding bikes, just like cars, they allow you to hang with some pretty cool people

You're making me want to get a mountain bike! I've already decided that my new TJ bumper has to have a hitch for a bike rack
