Episode 70: Supplements for Kidney Disease. Dietitians Insights on commonly promoted supplements. Renal Dietitian Jen and kidney health coach James discuss supplements for kidney disease from our experience. Kidney patients often want to try supplements to improve kidney function after doing online searches. We look at common supplements kidney patients often run across online and share helpful insights - from supplements that can help, to kidney supplements that do nothing, to some supplements that can harm your kidneys and accelerate kidney failure.

10:20 Resveratrol
11:25 Cocoa
13:33 Caution
14:25 Alpha Lipoic Acid
16:22 Salvia (not recommended)
20:28 Chitin (not recommended)
25:35 Omega 3
25:49 ProRenal+D
26:28 Keto analogs (not recommended)
30:38 Renadyl (not enough evidence for effectiveness)
37:27 Kidney Korrect (not enough evidence for effectiveness)
42:02 Turmric (absorbs better with black pepper)
44:36 Apple Cider Vinegar
48:32 CoQ10 (Safer supplement)
50:43 Carb Blockers (more evidence needed)
51:43 Baking Soda (Sodium bicarbonate)
1:02:02 Nutritional yeast
1:05:40 Renavit

We talk about the following kidney supplements: Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), CoQ10, Renadyl, Pro-Renal+D (a renal multivitamin), Omega 3, Resveratrol, Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA), Salvia, Chitosan, Amino Acids like Albutrix and Ketorena, Turmeric (with Ginger and Black Pepper), ACV (apple cider vinegar), Astragulus, and Kidney korrect. Learn which ones may be helpful, which most likely do nothing, and which can be harmful to people with chronic kidney disease. Many of these are promoted online as kidney cures with claims such as "reverse kidney disease with baking soda", making them sound appealing. But the truth is, you need to work with your health care team to determine which supplements you need and which you might benefit from. Never self-prescribe supplements - always consult with your doctor or dietitian first.

I'm a medical psychotherapist. I've worked with people who get devastating medical news for over 2 decades. It's my turn now, being diagnosed with stage 4 CKD. Scary and life changing. For mental health, seeing someone surviving & thriving is crucial. You are doing that James, and watching you calms & inspires. Thank you for the guidance & hope.

I used Chitosan for 3 months and I believe it was a huge benefit in raising my GFR from 56 to 76 and lowering creatinine from 1.30 to 1.00 in that time.

Hi James, you are providing a great service to us that suffer from CKD. I been using two Kibow products (Fortis and Renadyl) for the past month, so the jury’s still out on their effectiveness. I am also using a product by Healthy Kidney, Inc. called Kidney Restore. It was developed by a ND in New Jersey who is also a CKD patient. Since I just started using it, I don’t have any definite results at this time. Please let me know what you think about Kidney Restore.

Good evening DADVICE. I ran across you about 2 or 3 years ago when I had no kidney issues. I'd like to ask you about
N-Acetyl Cysteine to increase eGFR. Thank you both for your response. Best.

Hi James, I have CKD, I'm a 73 year old male also suffering from MS. I discovered I had CKD about 18 months ago, my GFR was 48, creatinine was 131 umol/L, all other renal test were right in the middle of normal. I changed my eating habits and ate only plant protein and cut out all highly processed food, also for the last 3 months I have been following a 16/8 intermittent fasting regime. For the last 15 months until 6 weeks ago my GFR has stayed in and around the mid 40's. My latest blood test showed a creatinine level of 188 umol/L with a GFR of 31. That's a drop of 10 points in 6 weeks. Would appreciate your input James. John

When someone improves their kidney function through diet, does it mean that the kidney has healed somewhat? Or does it mean it is only functioning better due to better nutrition, but is still damaged? Thanks.

Good idea for salad dressing is a mixture of natural lemon juice, olive oil and fresh garlic; also, the use of dry lemon juice; which is all natural is beneficial to substituting some of the salt. Dry lemon juice you can find at Indian grocery stores. Avoid any kind of processed food.
