The Age of Exploration

A whiteboard video on the European Age of Exploration and the discovery of a New World.

My students use the following textbook, some of whose units I have intended to summarize with these videos:

Alavosus, Laura, editor. Social Studies Alive! America's Past. Palo Alto: TCI, 2010.

The whiteboard designs and spoken commentary are all my own.

It wasn't a matter of Europeans getting sick and tired of trading overland (which would have been not so much a journey but the exchange of goods through many hands - each taking their share along the route from East to West), but Christian/Europeans were not able to travel through the Islamic and (naturally) hostile Middle East. Turning towards the sea then was the only option to get (possibly - if they could make it/find the way) to Southern Asia/South East Asia.
