As the 15th century comes to a close a new king comes to power in Portugal and is more determined than ever to find a sea passage to India. Increasingly a rival, Spain is determined to carve out an empire for itself. Based on the treaty of Tordesillas, the two Iberian powers divide the world in half. The race for riches is on.

King John II of Portugal was a formidable man. His vision and sagacity changed the world as we know it today but this is seldom gleaned or mentioned. He was also ruthless, bold, ambitious and supremely intelligent (hence, his title of "The Perfect Prince", as John II truly embodied Machiavelli's portrait of what a powerful ruler should be). Admired by Isabella of Castille (maybe because he outmaneuvered both the rival Iberian powers and the all-powerful Vatican and the infamous, cunning Borgia Pope), John still is an underrated colossus that died too young.
