I used to fly in Alaska back in the 1990s, and we'd operate out of a remote station from time to time. There was this one place (Galena?) where they based a couple F-15s, and they'd scramble every once in awhile. Once we were approaching the airport and the controller told us to stay clear of the area--and two F-15s departed and went vertical at the end of the runway.

Pretty cool to be at pattern altitude and see two F-15 jets go screaming upwards, only a couple miles away...afterburners blazing.

These actions still make my heart ache. During the Vietnam War, when 103s. 105s and b-52s took off, it meant somebody's dad wasn't coming home. Thank you to our troops is more than a slogan. Thank you, wives and families, too.

during Cold War era, pilots on alert were suited up, didn't take the time to get gear on like you see here, and didn't have stairway, had a pole to slide down like firemen do.

if I were to only have four missiles on the jet, I think I'd want them on the fuselage instead of the pylons...if it really came down to it, with the pylons jettisoned the F-15 is an absolute rocket

Vertical climbs like that are how fighters exceed 50, 000 feet!😀
