I had to leave my cats at home for a month for surgery and rehab. I live with a grandson, so didn't have ti worry about feeding, water, and litter problems, but I knew they would miss me. They always sleep on my bed at night, so when I left I didn't remove my sheets because I know cats have a good sense of smell. I wanted them to know I am still somewhere. When I came home, all six of them were asleep on my bed. They hadn't forgotten me. They kept rubbing against me, happy that I was back. I changed the bedding before sleeping because it had a lot of fur on it, but I believe that if you are going to be away for a long time you should leave items behind that have your smell on them to provide comfort for them until you return.

Last year I was unexpectedly in the hospital for almost 2 weeks. I hadn't planned on being gone so I didn't really prepare. I was grateful to have a friend go by every day to give them food and water and scoop out the litter boxes. She was only able to stay long enough to take care of those things so they were pretty much alone. It was really bad for one of my cats b/c she had belonged to my sister who had passed away less than 6 months before. My other cat basically followed me around and "yelled" at me for about 2 hours when I finally got home.

Last year we had to travel overseas to be with my mother in law, but before buying our flight or making any other arrangements, I needed to find someone who would stay in our home with our two young cats. I prepared and froze food for 36 days and had the person live with us and the cats for a few days and got them used to him feeding them rather than myself. Only this way could I travel with some peace of mind. And when we got back they were their happy usual selves and just as attached to us as when we left.

My husband had to leave our cat st the Vet for the day. He wrapped her in his big Canadian sweater. She stayed buried in it all day. The vet was impressed.

After 50 years i can finally have a cat. Im so happy now. A feral cat adopted me and I'm loving him with all the love he deserves.

Make sure your cat sitter is someone your cat knows, trusts, and likes. Also someone who will clean the litter, change it, check chow for mold or roaches, clean the food and water bowls, brush and actually spend time and play with them, and will watch your cat for injury or illness, and act accordingly. The last person you need is someone who just throws food in their bowl, adds clean water in a dirty bowl, then leaves. Or finally changes the litter the day before you get home. Know your cat sitter! ❤️

Being a first time cat owner I'm happy watching these videos knowing I'm doing a pretty good job at making sure my boy is happy

I'm never away for long. When I go out, I tell them where I'm going so they know how long I'll be away. I never stay away overnight.

As far as blinds go, my cats just push them out of the way.

I park a cat perch right by the window and having top-down, bottom-up blinds allows me to have a blind that’s up by ~8 inches so kitty can see outside. Works well and Kitty even snoozes on his window perch!

I discovered many years ago that 1 cat is trouble, 2 is fun and more seem to manage quite well.

My two year old spoiled cat starts hollering (meowing quite loud and desperately) when she thinks she got left alone. My husband and the adult children will take off on errands and she doesn't know I'm in the computer room watching cat videos. We also have a German Shepard. I think they have separation anxiety as they wait at the front door together for the humans to return.

Thank you, especially for explaining why water should be left far away from food bowl. I always wondered why cats love drinking from the sink and not from the prepared bowl.

Sometimes I leave my feline, for only 4hrs any longer a friend will come in. I'd never allow any stranger near my feline let alone on our territory.

I work during the day when I come home she greets me at the door, continuous miaowing as of saying I’ve been waiting. Then I pick her up and then she continues to purring. She in reality is never a dull day.

If I leave my cat for three hours, she yells at me when I get home and insists I spend 45 minutes with her before she will settle down. No, I don't get to go on vacation.

Great information. Confirms many of things I "thought" might be true.
We rarely travel.
SIGH, routines; retired recently and our four cats will make sure I'm up at 5 a.m.. SIGH double sigh. But it's o.k.. The cats (children) are so much happier having me around.
Lesson Learned, I don't train cats, they have trained me. Great joy to now spend more time with.

Oh, I had wondered why my cat displayed such different behavior after I was gone for a day. Thanks this is really helpful.

I have a tv in the cat room (sunroom) that I often turn on for their entertainment.
