The Armata is a new Russian main battle tank project. Sometimes it is referred as T-14. Its development commenced in 2011. The Armata was developed as a replacement to the cancelled T-95. The whole project was kept in high secrecy. First mock-up was revealed to Russian military officials in 2013. Trials commenced in 2014. The new MBT was first publicly revealed in 2015. A first batch of 12 to 32 tanks will be delivered in 2015. It seems that these tanks were built mainly for parades. However full-scale production could begin soon. It is planned that Armata will replace the ageing T-72 and T-80 with T-90 that become out-dated.
The Armata is a new-generation tank. It has little in common with the current T-90. Exact technical specifications of this MBT remain classified.
It has been reported that this main battle tank is operated by a crew of only 2 men, including commander and driver. If it is true, so far it is the only MBT to have such a small crew. Older Russian tanks have a crew of 3. While most Western MBTs have a crew of 4. Reduction of the crew to just 2 men allowed to reduce crew compartment, overall the size of the vehicle and improve protection.
The Armata might be one of the most protected MBTs in the world. It has been reported that it has newly-developed armor, made of steel, ceramics and composite materials. Also it has been reported that Armata has a Malakhit add-on explosive reactive armor of new generation. As usual this MBT is fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems. It has been reported that Armata will be fitted with new Afganit active protection system. It seems that it also has a new countermeasures system that reduces the chance of being hit by enemy ATGW with semi-automatic guidance. This new Russian tank uses smoke grenade dischargers of new type.
It has been reported that crew members are seated in a well protected armored capsule. It is separated from automatic loader and ammunition. The tank has improved resistance to damage. It can fight even with penetrated armor, as far as the crew cell is intact.
It was reported that Armata wil be armed with a 2A82 125-mm smoothbore gun. It has improved ballistics comparing with a 2A46M gun of the T-90 MBT. The gun is mounted in unmanned turret and is completed with an autoloader. This tank will be capable of firing gun-launched anti-tank guided missiles in the same manner as ordinary rounds. These missiles have a range of about 5 km and can also target low-flying helicopters.
The Armata MBT is fitted with new fire control system. The tank has a hunter-killer capability. It is also equipped with a battlefield management system.
It has been reported that this new main battle tank is powered by an A-82-2 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 1 200 hp. It is a new-generation engine that is much more compact than previous Russian tank engines. Engine is located at the rear. The Armata tank has 7 roadwheels of new type.
From the earliest stages the Armata was designed to be a versatile platform for a whole host of armored vehicles. Self-propelled artillery system, heavy IFV, armored recovery vehicle, self-propelled howitzer, heavy flamethrower system, engineering vehicle, self-propelled air-defense vehicle and other support machines will be based on this platform.

Which is better? Taking into account innovative rear-view mirrors of Leopard 2A7 it is the best.

from the point of view of Russian military science, the main purpose of tanks is to conduct combat operations in a nuclear war.
Tanks have the greatest resistance to the damaging factors of nuclear weapons and are able to quickly overcome radioactive contamination zones and make full use of the results of nuclear strikes on the enemy. In other words, first we will strike with nuclear weapons instead of artillery preparation, then our tanks will attack.
Germany does not take into account such nuances.

It could be, that the T 14 is better than the leopard 2A7. But Russia actually has no money, and when the situation in Russia is going to be worse, Putin has to tie a plow behind his "Supertank" to plant plants. lol :D

Leopard 2A7 is a far better tank. Its made by the German's which means, it works on the battle field. T14 is just a cheap tank that would not last. The USA and Australia Abrams tanks can't handle dust, just look it all the engine replacement during Iraq war. Leopard has the best engine, the best manufacturer "Germany", the best format. Also, I am not a German.

the T-14 is a prototype made of cardboard and duct tape that may never see production because of technological and financial hurdles.

The Leo 2A7 is as big as life and twice as ugly bad-ass Kraut tank.

I'm going to have to side with the Germans on this one.

nice comparison: T-14 armour 44S-sv-Sh and Leopard:3-d generation composite, and bla-bla-bla . :) Please mention that T-14 has armoured capsule and unoccupied tower. And it's armour is a secret.

I cant understand why people sit back and claim this T14 armata is the Best mbt. when it hasn't even hit production on a full level scale. and yet the design is horrible most of the sights are too big. they're a easy target for snipers too take out. plus!! Now that we know all the crew sits in the chassis, The whole Nato forces will be aiming at it. and also yet again russia fails! On sticking with ammo in the turret ring. there isn't that much space between the turret ring and the crew. So if the ammo is hit and set off, history for the own crew as of death". And still stuck with the 1970s 125mm smooth bore gun...? it shows russia lacks on making better guns. Germany will always be ahead of russia in every single way of weapon technology, So will USA, the UK. Dream on brainwashed russians.

And both tanks are about equally well

German tanks are one of the best, but when it´s on cheap mass production Russian rules like in WW2 with T34.

Germany Wins Strong Europe Tank Challenge

Stars and Stripes is reporting that the tank platoon from the German Bundeswehr has won the Strong Europe Tank Challenge at Grafenwoehr Training Area. This was the first such exercise held since 1991 and included tank platoons from six NATO countries, Germany, Poland, USA, Slovenia, Italy and Denmark. The German platoon competed with the Leopard 2A6 main battle tank, while Denmark and Poland used the Leopard 2A5. The US platoon compete with the Abrams M1A2, the Italian platoon with the Ariete MBT and Slovenia with the M-84. The German team was rewarded the top prize while Denmark took second place and the Poles secured third place. It seems bragging rights may be in order for the Leopard 2 tank.

According to an article from www.army.mil, the competition consisted of the following:

Platoons rotated throughout the three events, vying for a possible 1, 000 points. Crews conducted both offensive and defensive operations involving fire and maneuver for 350 possible points in each lane.

Mounted orienteering had a possible 300 points that was combined from six 50-point tasks, including a mystery physical challenge that emphasized teamwork. Platoons navigated through an obstacle course with 13 challenges. Soldiers fired 10 rounds from three different locations using their own service weapons during the combat pistol shoot lane. The vehicle identification lane tested the platoons’ abilities to identify 25 friendly and threatening vehicles while traversing through a course. Crews had to recover, hook up and tow vehicles while under a simulated chemical attack. Finally, multinational teams reacted to an improvised explosive device, assessed and treated a casualty, and requested a medical evacuation.
