Worst carp fishing rig ever... recorded underwater

Here I try using size 12 hooks in an attempt to catch more fish.
Sadly this resulted in abject failure.
Wont be using small hooks again for a while...

The whole point of the underwater camera is to learn, and that's what you did and anyone watching too. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for letting me learn from your experience. Cool experiment. Thanks.

The hook size isn't an issue - it just doesn't match the size of bait. With that combo of bait size and hook size there isn't nearly enough length in the hair to give the hook space to work. I personally think the whole rigs too long too, but changing that alone would probs make no difference.

An interesting watch as ever.

A carp can approach the bait from any direction and leave with the bait in any direction. My thinking is that a bait coiled next to the sinker/lead is the best way to go. This could be done using presentation foam or pva string. The only conclusion that I can come to (from watching these underwater videos) is that a short hook length is preferable as the longer the hook length, the more chance the carp has to reject the bait before the line goes taught.  Thanks for posting these fine videos.

American paylakers sometimes use size 4/0 hooks. This is not done out of ignorance, it is done in an environment where sometimes a great deal of money rests on the outcome.

the problem is that the hook was at the wrong angle... the way it was it was almost impossible for the fish to get hooked, its important for the rig to be at this angle especially when using a popup so that the point of the hook is in line with your hooklength so it is bent over more so that it hooks the lip, otherwise its way less effective as you can see here.

Can't see the hook size being a problem if anything should help in hooking being a finer gauge.
Are you using a mono hook link? just looks like the hooks not turning in properly.
Love the way at 0.50 as soon as the fish feels the hook link tighten against the weight of the lead it slaps itself into reverse and ejects.

That's a pukka rig if set up right. I would go out buddy and buy some good sharp hooks size 8/6 and have pop up on the back of the curve of the hook similar to a blow back set up and shorter lead drop system and that would of been a productive day for you, I think we need another vid of updated rig.

It seems to me that the rig just has too much movement. If the rig was shorter or made out of a stiffer material I reckon it would have taken hold. The bait size also looks a little large, I think a smaller pop-up may have helped the smaller hook as well.

Hook size looks OK, The issue i see is that the hook it too straight - not aggressive enough. Use either a hook bead or 1-2 wraps behind the hair to kick it out more. And use a hook with an in-turned eye.

i would use a 22mm boilie and a 10 hook you cant get a better hook hold as the common bass cannot eject the bait and the hook goes in their eye

Completely the wrong hooking arrangement for a pop up The fact that the bait was making the hook stand up vertically is the biggest issue with that one. The gape of the hook is completely compromised by the way the pop up has been mounted.
I would of use a good sized piece of shrink tube to gain the gape back and mount the bait closer to the eye of the hook making the hook sit at around 40 degrees.

It has nothing to do with the weight of the lead. 1 ounce can do the job perfectly. With that said, I think the hook is too small. Secondly the angle of the hook is almost 90 degrees. It should be no more than 60 degrees - 45 is even better. Last but not least, check the sharpness of your hook.

for pops ups i would of had the hair leaving the back of the hook opposite the point, not the  curve of hook, thats my feeling why these fish wasn't hooking up.

I agree with David here..bigger hook would of done the trick..the 2 shots being heaver will aid the turn of the hook the fish didn't use the weight of shots to get rid of the bait the hook merely didn't get a hold of the carp's mouth even after moving around aggressively straitening out the hooklink and moving the lead..bigger hook would of nailed them..

a short hook link that hook link was a meter long

size of your bait which is the problem not the hook! need to match the hook bait to the hook size

hook position looks to inline with the bait

Regardless of what rig you post, there will always be people insisting that the rig is wrong. Jerome Moisand posted several underwater videos and carp are pretty good at expelling any rig.
