To much kit out there designed to catch the angler rather than the fish.

I really would love to see Adam Penning and Chilli get together and debate these questions 😁 they both have polar opposite views and would be very interesting to watch.

Well said Ian. Due to retirement I have just returned to fishing after a 30 year absence. To say I am stunned with the marketing led approach to all types of fishing these days is an understatement. I've got rigs coming out of my ears - bolt rigs, running rigs, helicopter rigs, chod rigs, hair rigs, pop-up rigs, lead core, braid, mono, dark matter, tubing. etc. etc. I will admit it caused me so much confusion and angst (hook sharpening being one aspect) I nearly lost the motivation to fish. The one thing I am pleased about is the attention to respecting the fish. I did invest in a correctly sized quality landing net and a de-hooking cradle. Having sifted through all the YouTube videos I have filtered it down to a simple mono running rig setup.with some small sinkers to keep the hook link down. On the surface I simply use a floating hook link with no embellishments baited with dog biscuits. Both rigs have done me very proud and often catch 12lb+ carp in good numbers. I know when I start targeting 20lb+ carp I will need to have a rethink on my rig and line setup. My days of spending £60+ every time I walk into a fishing tackle shop are over!

Chilly is a true legend and has caught big fish where ever he has fished so there is a lot of truth in what he says. The right bait in the right place with a sharp hook will always catch.

Agree with you sir. There is so much bullshit in Fishing, people that go fishing forget that the fishing companies are there to make money they are a business so they will tell you that this is better than that etc and most of the time rip you off when you buy from them.. Go fishing enjoy, don’t be drawn into the BS.. If you look back at magazines from the 90’s they will be telling you the same stuff they are telling you today, the companies are fantastic at recycling!!!!’

Keep it simple and use what your confident in.. simples!

Simon Scott believes in rig camouflage, Terry Hearn uses the palm test and Jim Shelley sharpens hooks....

It's each to their own. Whatever you feel comfortable doing, do it! I fish with a couple of lads who've been fishing a lot longer than I have, they both like to follow the latest rig trends, I stick with my tried and trusted. On the other hand, they stick with the same bait, whereas I experimented a bit with hookbaits until I found one that I felt comfortable with. The last few times we've been out, I've caught more. Other times, they have. Just do whatever the hell you want and don't feel pressured into trying new things if you're confident in what you're doing! By all means give it a try if you want, though!

Good stuff. Works for me, carp fishing from USA to Europe. Keep up the solid, based on evidence, analysis. Zero fluff.

Dave Lane and Chilly are the only anglers I watch on here without question. They've been there and got the T Shirt.

agree with the hook sharpening! People over sharpening their hooks nowadays makes the hook brittle and the point more likely to bend over!

At Last - a knowledgeable, accomplished angler speaking the Truth & exposing the ‘so called’ other experts & tackle companies👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I have been fishing for 65yrs & it astounds me how angling attracts such gullible, money wasting idiots above all other sports/pastimes! There are so many YouTube anglers who must spend £1, 000’s upon £1, 000’s per year & catch no more/no better fish than I do using some tackle that’s 25-30yrs old! My main baits over the past few years are bread/worm/sweetcorn/hemp (cheapest, most available baits out there) & I have caught quite a few large fish of many species. You see extortionately marketed products by these leading tackle companies & the next week 1/2 the anglers on your lake or on YouTube are using them. Don’t get me started on reels!!! They have become the equivalent of football shirts - change every year, for absolutely no reason apart from aesthetics🙄 Well done ‘Chillie’ for exposing these myths & those who peddle & believe them👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎣👍🏻
