In an effort to limit the amount of times I look at my phone, I turned off all notifications for social media and email. It worked great for a while, but I've adapted to doing micro-checks for any missed messages. This has caused me to turn off Likes, Commenting, etc on social media to lessen the notifications in general. It's been entertaining to implement.

Now that I'm thinking about it, the title of the video reminds me of a book I read about tech addiction: Smart Phone Dumb Phone by Allen Carr. I strongly recomend it to people who want to gain control

I was on a rehabilitation retreat for depression and specifically media addiction and the jist of how to deal with media addiction was basically like this: go cold turkey with the worst offenders. But because electronic devices are a necessity nowadays it's not that easy to just completely throw them all out of your life.
The way they told us to handle media addiction was to put each electronic device and each media form into categories of red, yellow and green.
Red are the worst of the worst; the ones you spend hours on and that impact your life the most. Those are the ones you have to go cold turkey, most likey forever because most people will not be able to have a healthy relationship with them. In my case it is videogames.
Yellow are the ones you have to heavily monitor and that are at risk of becoming the next main form of addiction once you cut out the red ones. For me for instance Youtube videos.
Green are the ones you are totally fine with and are not addictiv at all. That is instant messengers for me.
It's a rather fluid construct (except for the red ones becoming yellow or even green ones) so as with everything addiction you have to keep an eye on your habbits and behaviours.

I see a lot of parallels with this and Cal Newport's 'Deep Work'. He talks a lot about the benefits of getting comfortable with being bored. Awesome work man!

I used a similar thing but instead of blocking these apps entirely, I deleted them from my Nova launcher homescreen, and after some customization, these apps are so hard to access, that every time I want to open them, I simply give up.

the main thing that prevents me from "using" a friend to lock certain services and websites is that: I might as a result change my behavior towards them as a result of some part of me craving, let's say YouTube.
Trying to manipulate them into giving me the password.
And this impacting my relation to this friend.

28 days to break a habit isn’t enough to break a old habit a new and more positive one needs to take its place

How do we approach that relationship with our technology and be more intentional about it instead of having it be in control of the behaviours and actions and things that we do instead we can- What did you mean by saying that?

NB Thomas Edison was not the inventor of the lightbulb. It was Joseph Swan.

when you put your phone in that box all I could think about was that you might have to call the cops or an ambulance and you won't be able to and I freaked out...I could never use one of those boxes, buuuut I can just put my phone down and not use it so I don't think I need it. Actually hearing you say that social media make you feel good was kind of weird because it makes me only feel shitty like I cannot look at Instagram anymore or any content really where I see perfect bodies being presented like fitness stuff or models etc. I literally start crying :)), it is a recent development but it keeps me away from social media...
