Hey bud! Got a question I hope you can answer. I have Ko2 tires on my truck, fairly aggressive tread when new. So I guess my question is, how can these gauges be universal? I would imagine that a new set of truck tires vs a new set of car tires would have a large difference in tread depth starting out, so would I be correct in assuming that they would enter a “yellow depth” at different times? Or does it not matter about the “like new depth” and they’re are all considering “yellow depth” at 6/32 straight across the board? I appreciate your time and great video too!

I started driving trucks others trucks on vac. I was worried about a tire being min 4/32 sec. Bought one and had no clue what -11 meant.

Thank you (things dmv do not teach)

Would it pass safety if its in the yellow on the reader?

It's not a tire gauge. It's a tread depth gauge. The proper way of measurement is to measure at the wear bar indicator in the groove of the tread. The wear bar is a small, more shallow point in the tread groove. Once the tire has worn to this point, the tire is legally bald and time for replacement. This is where the hydroplaning effect comes into play. When the tire is new, with plenty of tread depth, the water on the road is able to get out from under the tire. As the tire wears down, the grooves of the tire fill with the water, there is no way to shed the water. Next thing you know you are spinning out of control. Stay safe y'all 😎

Tread depth is not an indicator of how safe a tire is.
