How to Choose an IT Career Path

In this Trainer Talk, Jeremy Cioara answers the question: How does someone choose a career path? Drawing from personal experience and the insight he's gained through delivering IT training for decades, Jeremy explains where to start when considering an IT career.

Being curious about where to start, or where one's career should go, is a common and perfectly understandable question for anyone starting their IT career. Jeremy's key piece of advice for anyone starting out the journey of their career is to get as deep and broad a sense as you can about everything that's available to you. It's pretty hard to choose the best path for you if you don't know all the paths that you can take.

Jeremy recalls his own experience when he started out in IT, years past. He started on a college program in Computer Science because he had, up to that point, enjoyed computers. But a rigid college course in computer programming turned out to be the most miserable time of his life. It wasn't until he later found networking and routing that he realized there were more facets to IT than he'd known before. Learn what's available to you before you begin your career path and choose knowledgeably and wisely.

I accidentally fell into IT. Joined the Marines as a Data Network Specialist at the time. Didn't know what it was but the recruiter said it was high tech. Turns out it meant server/network/helpdesk slave. Now I'm a network engineer and never looked back.

Thank you Jeremy! CBT Nuggets needs to redesign their paths on the mobile app and website. If i want to go into networking and try using the CBT Nuggets paths link it brings me to a list of courses with no defined start here newbie. It is super confusing.
