Simple explanation of Definition Of Locus with a solved example. JEE Maths XII Locus

Locus
Definition: The set or arrangement of all points that satisfy a given equation or one or more algebraic conditions is called a locus
OBSERVATION
Any point that satisfies the given Condition is a point on the locus.
All the points on the locus satisfy the given condition.
Ex 1: Set of all points in a place that are equidistant from two given points is a straight line. Here, straight line is the locus.

In the above figure P and Q are two given points. The set of points {P1, P2, P3……} that are equidistant from P and Q forms a locus. Here, the points P1, P2, P3 ……… form a straight line.

Ex 2: Set of all points that are equidistant from a given point forms a locus which is called
“Circle.” In the above figure ‘C’ is the given point. The circle shown is the set of all points that are equidistant (r) from ‘C’. Hence, Circle is the locus here.
