Apple is switching to using a new type of tamper-resistant screw. Apple chose this fastener specifically because it was new, guaranteeing repair tools would be both rare and expensive. Shame on them. Fortunately, our always-creative hardware acquisition team has been working on this problem for a while. It's our responsibility to provide you with all the tools you need to work on electronics, and we have a solution for you!

Introducing the iPhone 4/4S Liberation Kit:

I bought my IPhone 4 in Germany on its launch day. It still has the original Phillips screws. I'm so glad about this. It's very easy to open and I need just one screwdriver.

Love the way you say that its definitely not a security screw.

Glad to see that the concern presented here was both warranted but that it was summarily mitigated quickly by cheap tool manufacturers selling through amazon/ebay etc. the pentalobe drivers for around $1 (one dollar). This is another reason I like buying Apple products because if I need a part or tool or accessory, I do'nt have to buy first party, I can buy 3rd party generics soon after release.

I bought the iFixit 54 bit kit a few months ago...comes in really handy. It has the Pentalobe 2 bit you'll need.

I KEEP THROWING WEDDING RINGS AT THE SCREEN BUT NOTHINGS HAPPENING!!

In all seriousness though this is the first time I've ran into any of your videos, great information for repairs. I'm an audio circuit tech by trade, just needed some info on taking apart my sister's phone. So thanks and keep up the great work!

And back to the sillyness: I swear I opened the first one of your videos and saw you standing in front of a scope and my heart fluttered. So just know you're breaking geeks hearts <3

@Michael Manoni - exactly! That's the first thing that came to my mind and to be honest, I don't have a problem with apple.

I agree. if you pay 600-700 dollars for a phone then it is yours to potentially break.

from a consumer stand point, I really do value your services. Your presenter is a bit of a God-sent angel when it comes to helping me take apart my iphone.
From a marketing stand point... it might have been a bit better to post the video with a different.. maybe male.. presenter. as to keep the appearance of your "eye candy" squeaky clean.

You guy's are AWESOME! I never heard about Apple changing the screws, makes me worried about the iPhone 5 now, what the hell will they do with that? I really appreciate the fact my iPhone 4 has tiny philips screws, I can change my battery really easily, but are they going to seal the iPhone 5 so you can't?

@acer589 From what I can tell, that's when they began shipping in the US. (Thanks for watching, btw!) <3 mj

@iFixitYourself My UK iPhone 4 from late 2010 also has phillips screws. So not just in the US!

Yes Torx T1 will do, or Pentalobe 2 for iPhone, 5 for MacBook Air, 6 for MacBook Pro.
