My wife is starting to get into pens and turquoise is her favorite color so I was able to hunt for a NOS M600 turquoise from 2018. That was the year we got married and had lots of other big life events so it ended up being great all around.

I always have three pens inked: blue ink for writing, brown for rewriting, and red for corrections. So I use the M600 for the latter, an M800 for the rewriting, and the M1000 for initial writing. When the inks run out (refilling when necessary until they're synced), I switch off to three Viscontis: the Opera for red, the Medici for brown, and the Homo Sapiens for blue.

My first "expensive" fountain pen was the TWSBI Vac 700R fine point in Iris. Put diamine lavender ink in it. Purple makes me get all the feels. Found out it they have a mini vac... got it with lavender ink. Found a mini in limited edition purple aluminum? section, had to get it... lavender ink. Recently got paranoid that my Iris might break, so i bought another Iris with a stub nib... filled it with diamine jack frost bc I needed a pen to handle that shimmer!😅 it lays it down thick. These were my purple obsession pens.

Have about 5 metropolitans in all the collector colors with a variety of nibs to try - from early on. More about the nibs in a pen that I like.

And recently got the Asvine V126 in several colors & finishes, all in a medium nib because they handle shimmer ink so well. You can see it sloshing and monitor the shimmer settling. Diamine glacier in a frosted white/clear Asvine V126 is divine! So those are more about the ink in a good pen.

But i am still trying others. Just ordered a Pilot E95s & somehow got caught up in an exclusive Benu firefly, with lots of purple I had to have. So big pen day today. I call it xmas prep.

Another aspect of the "hunt" would be serendipity. I visit the flea market every week, and maybe a couple times a year I pick up a really nice pen (or other item from one of my other rabbit holes). Economically, that doesn't make sense, I could just sit at home, save my time and money and get one from a specialized dealer. I just enjoy the poking around and seeing what turns up.

Collecting one type of pen makes one appreciate individual design/functional brilliance. Close comparison is always instructive. Thanks for recounting your journey.

Got a cheap zebra disposable last week simply because I needed a pen.. that 3 dollar pen sparked some intense inspiration. Been looking at fountain pens obsessively ever since. Dying to have a decent entry level pen, right now! And as soon as I can swing the 30 bucks or so, I plan on it. I'm telling you, that inspiration came out of left field.
Dig the channel, great commentary and loads of good info. Keep it up!

Agreed on pelikans being great.

When I first entered the FP rabbit hole, thought the design was fine, albeit slightly old.

Years later I held one, and boy, the shape just felt like it was molded into my hand. And the clip that I thought was old fashioned? Elegant and inoffensive to look at for prolonged periods of time, it just feels and looks right. It's feels.... Familiar.

The other one would be the wing sung 601 or parker 51 (vintage) the gold cap and hooded nib of that pen shape is just it. Slim and slender enough to pick it over any ballpoint, yet not too flashy or heavy. Gold trim pens are the best imo.

That said, I do love my other pens, but these 'older' pen designs are popular for a reason. Classy and functional.

1:58 -- You don't need green paint. Use a green (or whatever color you like) china pencil. It's wax so it'll stay in the engraving but it's not permanent so it doesn't damage the pen in case you're adding a color that's not "original" to the model.

I completed the set of Pilot MR3 Urban Retro Pop pens, and inked them with corresponding colours. It's like the infinity gauntlet, but with pens😅

I got my grail pen a year ago. Nothing fancy: a Parker 65 like the one I got my Papa in the 70s. Lovely gold medium nib.

Upon which I promptly dropped it. Got it straightened out. Dropped it again.

Realised that I was getting a message from destiny: this pen was not meant for me.

Meanwhile the dog chewed up the rolled gold Parker Arrow that Papa got me for my 21st. Took it to Pens Plus in Oxford for repair.

Where I got a Lamy Studio with a 1.1mm stub nib. With which I am very, very happy.

As I only have but a single right hand with which to write, I need nothing more. But the dubdubdub now knows that I have been interested in pens and is reconditioning me. I can feel myself being drawn to the dark side.

Which thanks you for your service!

The older Pelikan fountain pens have gold nibs with more bounce to them and have a bit of line variation. The newer ones have nibs that are a bit stiffer. I am becoming a Leonardoholic because of the way that these fountain pens feel in my hand, and I enjoy how they have some different nib options. It does feel satisfying when you are looking for a specific fountain pen and you find it after searching for months or even years. Have you thought about contacting the Pelikan factory in Hannover, Germany, to ask about what paint colors were used on the finial. I am glad that you are part of the fountain pen community because of your keen attention to details and engineering designs.

I have never had an interest in fountain pens, I recently tried out some dip pens for some sketching. While researching ink, the youtube algorithm brought me over to your channel and within 2 weeks I own way too many lamy safari, some pilot kakuno, and I have a twsbi eco on the way haha. I'm someone who likes to match colors to my mood or the activity. Gives the Lil serotonin boost I need for my day. So thanks for sparking my interest in this hobby!

My Pelikan pens are my favorite. I’ve mentioned in a video, “If I had to get rid of all pens except for one brand, I’d keep my Pelikans.” Fortunately, I am still enjoying all y brands in a variety of nibs and colors. Blessings!

The green painted logo on the finial didn’t start till the 400N model in 1956, so I wouldn’t suggest adding paint to the logo on your 400. I have a 400 from the release year (1950) with little to no wear and there’s no green paint on finial logo. I agree that the hunt is very gratifying when you find the right price for the pen you’re wanting. I have a number of Pelikans, for the way the nib feels/performs… and for series models or special editions.

In Korean FP community, we're calling your exact symptom 조류독감 which means "Bird Influenza" and there are plenty of chronic patients here. 😂😂😂

I absolutely LOVE Pelikan as a brand, both modern and vintage. IMO, vintage Pelikan doesn’t get the credit it deserves from the FP community at large. The nibs are great, they’re ultra convenient to fill and keep clean(screw-in nib units for the win!), write incredibly well, and are easy to service. You don’t have to be a world class pen mechanic to service these pens. Not to mention the bounce, and out and out flex some of the nibs have. Great, GREAT, pens! As far as the modern Pelikans go, what keeps bringing me back is the quality of their models, the solid feel of the pens when I pick them up/cap and un-cap them. Fantastic pens! Not a fan of doing away with the transparency on the modern Souveran line however. Big mistake imho….great video as always, Doodlebud!
