Im an ex-engineer( mechanical-retired ). Although marking out and cutting is second nature to me, for the last 40-odd years that's all been done with steel. So things like this obviously didn't apply. Very grateful you take the time to show these tips.
Remember -they are only basic tips, if you are a woodworker.
To the rest of us mere mortals, they are pure GOLD !

Paul used to do similar joints by hand at the shows when hand tools were long forgotten and you could buy for less than scrap metal price. Absolute hero of mine. Never pushed a sale either and he could have made quite a few shilings if he did.

Thank you Paul, I've done this sort of thing on a table saw dozens of times. I never really considered doing a rebate using a handsaw. In my quest to change into a hand tool maker, this little gem of perspective is very useful.

Oh my goodness I just learned something new.
What you're doing is a rabbet in (American English) or rebate in(British English). That's actually really interesting definitely makes me wonder what other words we decided to change over here in North America. Such as football, a sport where the foot is not allowed to touch the ball unless it's done by a kicker.
Plus I'm glad that you liked my comment today. It reminded me that my favourite Carpenter has a video on how to do this.
