Don’t do this, if you don’t have a proper business to legally off set the lack of withholdings. Otherwise, you will owe the IRS a lot of money. This is only good advice, for people who are super on top of their accounting. Most people are not, so for the majority of regular taxpayers, it’s actually good to pay a little more, so they don’t have a huge debt, at the end of the year.

You literally don't choose how much you pay to the government unless you're self employed. Companies will automatically deduct your income tax from your paycheck. This is pretty meaningless for 90% of people whose income comes from working a job.

I feel like this needs to be said but it is good to overpay a little just to be safe that you didn't short them on your taxes especially since not everyone is good at math

Yes and no. Those who work overtime and with fluctuating hours will always get back. Because you get taxed on each week's income. So if 1 week you get 60 hours and the next you get 40 then your taxes are bound to be messed up
