There is also a lot of pirate history surrounding New Orleans. It was a stomping ground for pirates to mingle with the higher class and be hired to do their less than savory business ventures.

The difference between New Orleans and Detroit is particular but important.

New Orleans got big due to location, which eventually became (relatively) unimportant. You can't change New Orleans' location to get it back.
Detroit got big due to manufacturing, which eventually just got outcompeted by foreign nations like China. But you can change industry.

So Detroit fell hard and fast, but ultimately the reason it became big in the first place can, hypothetically, be recreated or at least partially replicated. It may never dominate again, but it can recover.

Louisiana’s history as a whole is so fascinating. As someone who was born and raised here, I am still learning new things about our amazing state all the time. We are definitely tough down here.

New Orleans took on Ida really well. All the surge barriers, hundreds of flood gates and pumping stations did their jobs. Ida(172mph)was much worse than Katrina(125) at landfall. No Katrina this time because lessons were learned. Thanks.

It sad living in southeast Louisiana, being devastated by ida, and knowing that the land I live in won’t be around much longer. Also you should react to this week in sportsball week 1 by urinating tree!

Thanks for your sincere reaction Beesley. I live in the south, but I personally could never live anywhere on the Gulf Coast. I just couldn't deal with the threat year after year, because storms are definitely getting stronger and more frequent. I still know people in my town who came here after Katrina and they are still here. We do get affected by the storms off the Atlantic, but the last major hurricane that tore the state apart was Hugo back in 1989.

The Fleur-de-lis, symbol of New Orleans is also Louisville, Kentucky's symbol.

Hey Beesley! I was stationed in Metairie on a mobile Emergency Room based out of Charlotte called Med-1 and Med-2 for a week and a half. The Hurricane was called Ida...Tulane University goes back to school in 6 days....

The first time I went to New Orleans my friends and I were walking from our hotel to the riverfront. It was just a few blocks away. As we got closer I could see this huge ship headed upriver. As I watched it pass, I realized I was looking up at it. The river was above me, behind an earthen levy. It was weird, but I LOVE New Orleans.

Control of the port of New Orleans was a major part of the War of 1812.

I feel personally attacked. The city still hasn't recovered fully from Katrina. You can drive around certain areas and still see homes abandoned and destroyed from Katrina. But I don't know if I could ever leave. I can drive 20 minutes to my fishing camps or 20 minutes to the city to do whatever I need.

Also, I've lived here for 25 years and just realized when I was watching the news before Ida that Lake Borgne looks very phallic...

I read two books I found in an old house during Ida.
Way Down Yonder in Plaquemines (I wanted to learn more about my Parish) and
Last Days of Last Island (A resort island off the coast of Houma where all the wealthy people from New Orleans traveled to for vacation back in the 1800's that was wipe out by a Hurricane in the 1850's)

As far as what we're going to do with the city, we're spending money on removing monuments. Louisiana and New Orleans historically have extremely corrupt government as far as economy is concerned. You'd think a place with a river as important as the Mississippi River couple with multiple major oil refineries along the river would have a booming economy. We all just kind of accept the city will be uninhabitable as some point.. We all just hope it's not in our lifetime... but it feels inevitable.

RLL is really a great channel(not sure if you've watched their stuff before, I'm fairly new here.) And yeah, this reminded me of a quote from a guy interviewed in a hurricane documentary awhile back: "New Orleans is a great city in a mudhole."

I live in Baton Rouge. About 45 minutes Northwest of New Orleans. I lost power for a week after Hurricane Ida.

New Orleans is so fascinating, definitely recommend visiting. I'm quite saddened that this unique place may come to an end so tragically...

Bees, New Orleans is one of the biggest tourist cities in the US as the French Quarter, near downtown, is famous for its restaurants & its nightlife...and a lot of jazz music !
