Shapiro didn't mention the aspect of 1984 that I've always found most compelling, although he does talk around it quite a bit. The role of language and the manipulation of language is everywhere in 1984, and so it was with the ussr and every implementation of totalitarianism. If you control language, you can control thought and behavior.

Orwell’s fatal mistake was envisioning a dystopia where the government destroyed all books, whereas Huxley correctly predicted that the true dystopia was a society where people placed no importance or care on books at all.

The thing is, 1984 was not only critizising communism, but every type of authoristarianism

Something Orwell failed to predict was that we would buy the cameras ourselves and our biggest fear would be that no one is watching.

One of my favorite Orwell quotes: “He who controls the present controls the past. He who controls the past controls the future.” We’re living that quote right now.

as an Iranian reading this book was a hole different experience than my friends in other countries described, here you can basically see the things happening in book happening in you house, work and streets.
what's funny is that a huge chunk of book was censored which in it self was a huge blow to me. eventually I read the English uncensored version of the book online and I can guarantee that at least 150 pages were censored

We’re absolutely a blend of all three books- BNW, Fahrenheit 451, and 1984. A lot of stuff that’s come true just hasn’t happen exactly the way they were predicted in the books.

I've taught 1984 and Animal Farm in my college classes for 20 years. They are certainly imperfect texts, but great examinations of control, manipulation, and domination. Over the years, I have had my students write papers that compare the governments in the texts to regimes in modern history. Now here's the kicker, I have been doing so in Los Angeles and surrounding counties. Nary a contentious word has been heard. I've found that, as per usual, it's not the people who are the problem, but the governing class. Have faith and stay strong. There is power in absolute truth.

Parsons is one of the saddest characters I’ve ever read. The scene of him eating in the cafeteria and going on about rations always stuck with me.

I've read lots of horror novels and none compare to Orwell"s 1984. By far the most frightening book of all time and it's not even close.

For those who haven't read it, A brave new world by Huxley is one of the best books you'll ever read and on a similar topic also

As someone who lives in a 3rd world country, 1984 is scarily similar when it comes to societal problems as well as government oppression moreso than someone in the west. Though I understand that the west struggles from a lot of the same issues, personally the love story of Winston and Julia almost mimics some personal stories. Premarital sex, as well as opposite gender physical contact in general is incriminating. I find myself hugging in private because I could very well get arrested for simply that, let alone having sex with another consenting adult without the rest of society telling on us and potentially getting us imprisoned. So Oceania exists right now just in different parts of the world to varying degrees.

I'm a senior in high school and my honors English class is reading this book as we speak. It was actually kinda scary noticing the largest similarities between what's in the book and in our modern day. And even the smallest of similarities struck me as well.

I read a biography on Leonardo Davinci by Walter Isaacson. I was so thrown off because the author kept emphasizing how Da Vinci was the first of his time to be gender fluid/gay in his sex appearance and behavior. Like... wtf...? The last pages revealed he worked for CNN and then I realized they're trying to rewrite history again. Coincidentally rewriting words/history was Winston's job in 1984 while he worked for big brother. Food for thought

I recently read 1984, and it was probably the only book I've read voluntarily. What is so mesmerizing is how this book practically FORCES you to visualize what's going on, and how Winston develops through the story.

The last point Shapiro makes explains why Thanos was such an interesting and yet terrifying villain. The willingness to destroy half of the universe in pursuit of utopia and fully believe you are righteous and heroic while doing it.

No sir, you are wrong.. A lot of what he was writing about was the dictatorship of Franco, Mussolini and Hitler. My great-grandfather (a journalist in North Spain) in my thumbnail knew and worked with Orwell. Orwell said EVERTHING he ever wrote was inspired about the Spanish Civil War. "“Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it, ”” Orwell declared in his 1946 essay “Why I Write, ”...I don't remember there being a fight for Democratic socialism in Russia....However, that is what the Spanish Civil War was about. Orwell was never in Russia but he was in Spain fighting where he was recruited as an admiral for the Second Republic. Orwell wanted to join the communist faction but was disheartened by how they undermined the Democrat Socialists of the Republic against the fascists. Orwell fought for the Republic and said on his deathbed his heart will always be with the Social Democrats of the Republic. He said that if he had to choose between Stalinism and Hitler (who was allies with the Fascists Franco and Mussolini and the Catholic Church) he would choose Stalinism. Ministry of Truth in 1984 is responsible for education..Ministry of Truth or the Church forced all children to be taught Catholic ways AFTER it was voted there would be a separation of church and state by the people, but they forced religious doctrine on all school children regardless. Ministry of Truth was responsible for news which was also the monarchists and the Catholic Church. Yes, taking a lover was a way to fight back against the state because the Catholic Church sided with the fascists. You were suppose to get married. The Spaniards under Franco were ruled by the Catholic Church until Franco's death in 1975. It was literally a fight against the elites by the working class. "Journalist Dorian Lynskey’s book The Ministry of Truth: The Biography of George Orwell’s 1984 discusses the novel’s origin, development, and impact. In particular, he shows how Orwell’s experience in the Spanish Civil War became the driving force behind the tome’s creation."

Just today I watched an old sci-fi movie, Winston Smith 1956. It's based on 1984, and left me stunned. We absolutely are living it right now.

"1984" might be imperfect as a warning for us today, but there is enough in it to give us pause to ask ourselves, "Do we really want to go down such a destructive path?"
