Can’t stand your dog’s bad breath? These veterinarian-recommended tips may just be the remedy for bad breath in your dog.

Top Takeaways:

1. Stinky dog breath isn’t something you should ignore. It can signal an underlying health issue, dental disease, or unusual diet.
2. Scheduling professional routine dental cleanings each year can help keep your pup’s oral hygiene in tip-top shape both now and into the future.
3. There are at-home treatments you can rely on to help supplement oral health care for your pup and keep halitosis in dogs at bay.

Puppy kisses aren’t quite as cute when your dog’s breath is bad, are they? To keep your dog healthy and their kisses at their most pleasant, here’s everything you need to know about bad breath in dogs, including why it happens, how to fix it and how to prevent it in the first place.

What causes horrible dog breath? These are the most common culprits:

Plaque and tartar buildup
Periodontal disease
Something stuck in their teeth
Eating something they shouldn’t
Underlying health issues like diabetes, kidney disease or liver disease

With so many different reasons for your canine’s bad breath, finding a remedy means first pinpointing the cause for your unique pup. If you’re concerned about your dog’s health, contact your veterinarian.

So, what’s the trick to freshening dog breath? Try these vet-recommended tips:

1. Brush Your Pup’s Teeth Daily

You wouldn’t go a day without brushing your own teeth, right? Well, your pet’s daily dental routine is just as important. Most vets recommend brushing your pup’s teeth daily. It's the best way to reduce the amount of plaque buildup and keep food particles from sitting on the teeth.

2. Give Your Dog Dental Chews

While brushing your dog’s teeth is the most effective, enzymatically coated dental chews can supplement their dental health. These teeth-cleaning treats are designed to help remove plaque from your dog’s teeth, keeping their breath smelling beautifully fresh.

3. Use a Water Additive

Water additives may also help prevent bad breath by fighting off plaque, tartar and the resulting bacteria growth.

Like dental treats, these supplemental solutions contain plaque and bacteria-fighting ingredients, but in liquid form. They can be added to your dog’s water for an easy way to help boost their dental health.

4. Talk to Your Vet

Your dog’s veterinarian is their dentist, too, so regular vet checkups are important in keeping their teeth and mouth healthy—and key in keeping bad breath away. An annual professional dental cleaning is a good idea, too.

Your veterinarian may uncover health issues and recommend appropriate medications, such as antibiotics and supplements, to properly treat it and prevent it from progressing.

5. Avoid Home Remedies

You already know the best at-home treatments for bad dog breath: regular brushing, dental chews, and water additives. It may be tempting to try DIY solutions, but veterinarians advise against it—some can be unpleasant or even harmful for your dog, and they can delay care for serious conditions like oral infections or gingivitis.

My little dog is a beast
Especially when it’s her
Nails or Toothies
I actually take her to
the vet for her nails!
It’s to traumatic to go
to the groomer..I can
get the her front teeth
but not the side and
her back teeth! I try
to use a damp cloth with
Dogie toothpaste, but she does
have tarter on her back teeth😢

It’s the bad bacteria that causes bad breath.
If you put a little coconut oil on your finger & let the dog lick it off your finger. Bad breath is gone!

Coconut oil is anti bacterial! Only use a small amount of coconut oil! I do this in the evening after the dog is done eating for the day.

Does this work on people too? There is a girl down the street who can make the trees wilt when she exhale. Poor trees.

Ok so what should I do if my dog absolutely will not let me brush her teeth? And as well, she pukes up the dental chews?

You might want to reword your caption. "Bad dog breath" infers the dog itself is bad. "Dog bad breath" infers it's the breath. Good product, though. My dog likes it

Remember too that every time your dog kisses you on the lips he/her transfers the living organisms in his mouth to you!
