The main theme, which James Newton Howard weaves throughout the whole film, is given an all-out rendition in the main titles, to warn us of what's to come. It then slowly and subtly starts to build up as the film progresses, in both tense and beautiful versions. Here's one of the memorable scenes where it starts to take flight.

Starring Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, M. Night Shyamalan, Abigail Breslin and Rory Culkin. Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, with a superb score by James Newton Howard.

What makes this movie so awesome is that several scenes take place in broad daylight and are just as unsettling as the scenes that take place at night

What makes this movie so incredible is how everything is experienced from the perspective of an isolated family. The scenes of terror feel claustrophobic. The scenes of sorrow feel intimate. The scenes of hope feel like you’re experiencing them with people you know. The scenes of despair feel like sulking in your own bedroom. You really do feel like you’re out on a farm with no one to help you.

“This is why we don’t watch tv” is exactly what my dad used to say when I was scared of monsters/killers and would run to his room in the night 😂

Signs is the PERFECT execution of showing you JUST ENOUGH of the aliens to induce that fear. It makes you want more to see more but it’s so satisfying at the end you just appreciate the ride

I saw this film with around 500 people on a Saturday night when it first released, and the audience reaction... Wow. Unforgettable.

“You’ll lose the signal.” Laughed so hard at such a serious moment.

The sounds and music in this movie were a masterpiece. I was 8 years old when I saw this movie for the first time, and it terrified me. I still think after all these years the sounds the baby monitor are making in this scene are some of the scariest things that still make me uncomfortable 20 years later.

I live in Indiana, so that means I live near a corn field. So this hits hard.

My youngest brother was born the year this came out, and my mom had the exact same type of baby monitor. We actually did live out on our family farm where we had corn growing that year. Needless to say, she and my oldest sister burned those monitors in our bonfire pit after they thought they heard the noises on them. 😂👌🏻

I wonder if the aliens went quiet because they realised that the family were listening?

When they all touch the signal is at its strongest

Morgan: there's two of them talking.

Alien 1: Dude, those humans are so stupid, they even don't know we are watching them.
Alien 2: lol.
Alien 3: HEY WHO THE HELL LEFT THE MICROPHONE ON?!
Alien 1: oh shit!
Alien 2: Turn it off, they are listening to us.

Joaquin Phoenix saying you'll lose the signal and the music playing right after is great.

Notice when they all hop on the car and when they touch each other the signal turns up, and in the dinner scene when there all hugging the signal turns up again on the baby monitor

This movie sets up everything perfectly. The fact that the creepiest scenes don't have music, the fact that the scenes at day are just as creepy as the scenes at night, the emotional connection you have with the characters and little things such as when they're all not showing the aliens until the very end of the movie or the fact that the aliens respond through the baby monitor when they're all united as a family. It's a masterpiece of film making. The best alien movie ever made.

In broad daylight, near an open field, yet I've never felt more claustrophobic watching this scene

I love this scene so much. I find it interesting cus so many people found this scene to be very creepy and disturbing but I honestly always saw it in a very mystical, beautiful sort of way. Especially the shot of him holding the monitor to the sky, something about that shot has always given me chills, i get emotional sometimes watching it cus its such a strong example of pure movie magic.
