Signs (2002) - 'Brazilian Video' scene [1080]

James Newton Howard has written some of his best music for the films of M. Night Shyamalan, and Signs is arguably the best of them all so far. The simple but effective main theme manages to convey all the necessary urgency, terror and wonder as the plot unfolds. In this early scene, the music perfectly accompanies a chilling home video.

Starring Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, M. Night Shyamalan, Abigail Breslin and Rory Culkin. Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, with a superb score by James Newton Howard.

I remember people saying Phoenix was "overacting". He was watching a f... alien FOR THE FIRST TIME. How is he supposed to react?
This is one of the best, scariest, most amazing scenes I've ever watched in a movie theatre. People's reactions... dear Lord. 🎩

I still get chills after watching this scene many times

What's great about this scene is that the alien isn't attacking or sneaking up on them, he's just strolling and it happens to be scary AF.

I am brazilian and i was 8 years old when i saw the movie for the first time, and i still lived in the city that the girl mentioned in Passo Fundo. Imagine how many days i went without sleep

I saw this at my older cousin's house when I was 8. That night I slept next to an air vent that looked exactly like the coal shoot. Hands down worst night of my life.

one of the best "jump scare" I've seen in cinema. Great use of the camera and the confusing screams of the children to build the tension.

No scene in any movie scared me as much as this right here. Absolutely traumatizing to a 10 year old. It gave me such a chill to the bone that I had to sleep with a lamp for about a week straight. Not even kidding.

I saw it again years later when I was a teenager and it spooked me almost as much then. Truly a terrifying moment in cinematic history.

The purpose of this scene was to scare the daylights out of people and to set the table for what was coming. And it worked. Sitting here 20 years later, we can all parse every frame of the film and find something to gripe about. But in the end, it's an excellent movie that achieves its purpose of entertaining the audience, inducing scary reactions, and delivering a good message. When my children were younger and we were going somewhere for a family outing, they'd always bombard me with "Where are we going?" questions. Eventually I would just say, "Relax and enjoy the ride." Sometimes, that's what we need to do with movies, relax and enjoy the ride. Even "Battlefield Earth!"

I just love how Merrell was in such uttered disbelief and completely wow by the fact that there was just an alien exposed by a family in broad daylight and still couldn't believe it.

You can see it just standing there before he walks out

I don’t get why people are having a hard time with this: they’re speaking Portuguese and Phoenix, portraying a small town American, doesn’t know this and assumes Spanish.

That being said, this scene really stuck with me as a kid. Great film.

Absolute post-9/11 scene. World was freaked the hell out by the idea of a breaking news event that made the whole world stop

I'm brazilian and this scene turns funny when the kid suddenly swtiches from portuguese to english when he said "it's behind!" 🤣🤣

The walk across the alley wasn't the jump scare. We expected to see something come into our view. What we didn't realize is we went right into to the alien's view when we rushed to the door. Once it realized it was only humans watching it, it carried on. The same way we carry on when we think there's a robber in our house, but it's just the cat.

i was 10 and saw this in theatres, my legs seemed to go numb from the fear. Haven't felt that from any other jump scare.

That scene scared the shit out of me when i first watched it at the theater (at the age of 12). Plus, I don't live far from that city...

What's gets me in this scene is not merrals reaction but the lady that is heard screaming in the video as the alien appears, that is the scream of a person that is truly terrified at the sight of a extraterrestrial beining
