Self-Test: Do You Have Hypermobility? #joints. Individuals with joint hypermobility, characterized by an unusually wide range of motion in one or more joints, may possess certain advantages in various aspects of life due to their unique physical characteristics. While joint hypermobility can present challenges and increased risk of injury in some cases, it can also confer several benefits: Flexibility and Range of Motion: One of the most obvious advantages of joint hypermobility is increased flexibility and range of motion. This can be advantageous in activities that require a high degree of flexibility, such as dance, gymnastics, martial arts, or yoga. Individuals with joint hypermobility may find it easier to perform certain poses or movements that require extreme flexibility, potentially excelling in these activities. Artistic and Performance Skills: Joint hypermobility can enhance artistic and performance skills, particularly in disciplines that involve body movement and expression. Dancers, contortionists, circus performers, and actors may benefit from the increased range of motion provided by joint hypermobility, allowing them to achieve more dramatic or visually striking performances. Adaptability in Sports: In certain sports, such as gymnastics, figure skating, or martial arts, joint hypermobility can provide a competitive edge. Increased joint flexibility may allow athletes to perform complex maneuvers with greater ease and fluidity, potentially enhancing their performance and versatility in these disciplines. Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy: Individuals with joint hypermobility may respond well to certain types of rehabilitation and physical therapy exercises. Their increased flexibility and range of motion can facilitate the rehabilitation process, allowing them to recover from injuries more quickly and regain functional movement patterns with greater ease. Mind-Body Practices: Joint hypermobility can also be advantageous in mind-body practices such as meditation, tai chi, or qigong, which emphasize fluid movement and body awareness. Individuals with hypermobile joints may find it easier to achieve deep relaxation and mindfulness through these practices, enhancing their overall well-being and stress management #flexible #interesting

Bonus info: hypermobility is quite common, and usually benign although it can make you more injury prone. It can however, also can be part of certain (often congenital) conditions which can range from mild to severe, and potentially be the cause of issues far outside of the musculoskeletal system.

If you are hypermobile and you have a lot of joint pain and/or your joints dislocate (=come out of socket) easily, it might be worth having it checked out.

If you have extreme pain or other weird symptoms like gut issues, neck pain, dizziness upon standing, etc... it's worth looking into Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome or Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder which can be evaluated and diagnosed by a geneticist. Many of us with Hypermobility are living in constant pain with a vast array of seemingly unrelated symptoms, but they are all connected. 'If you can't connect the issues, think connective tissue.'

Note that the older you are, the lower your score to be included in the hyper mobility designation. At 13 I score 9 pot of 9, at 55 I score 2 because my thumbs, pinkies dislocation when I do these exercises. If I let my elbows bend that much I dislocated my collar bones at the shoulder. My hips and spine sublex if I put my hands on the floor /beyond my feet with my legs straight. I do not do the "party tricks" anymore because the damage isn't worth it.

I have the knees and can touch the floor. My pinkie is pretty mobile even today with arthritis, but I never had the elbows and thumb joint. But .... I can walk off my foot and roll my ankle walking barefoot on flat solid ground, and I can roll my hip joint so it certainly feels like it's out of it's socket. Not to mention having a dislocated shoulder relocate itself. (1/10, do not recommend the dislocation). For some reason the Beighton score is heavily used for hEDS diagnosis, and they ignore all the other joints, even though you can have hEDS without hypermobility in every single joint.

I'm hypermobile (yes, told so by doctors) but can't pass this test😂
most of my problems are in my shoulders. My hips & elbows are slowly getting "worse" with time..
Practically, all of my joints move very easily, and that's definitely a problem! Nerve pain is a b*tch😅

I've always been able to bend my thumbs backwards 130 degrees. Apparently, that was abnormal and freaked people out.

what are examples of stability vs stretching work?

What's the opposite of hypermobility? I seem to have that.

I love the pinky on the table. 90° at the first joint(and not just the pinky) and at least another 45° at the second knuckle. Finger splints a necessity

I have hypermobility syndrome but it hurts me 24/7 man, it’s not even funny. My hands/fingers are by far the most life ruining.

Could use my hand without any pain for multiple months, was terrible at school.
The doctor just said that can happen if you have hypermobility and to just train my hands more with stress balls or similar.
