In Australia we call it a surf key. As there are no electronics you can lock the normal key in the car and take the plastic key with you while you're in the water

My GTI has the same thing, minus the extra plastic key to lose/break. Just flip out the normal key and pop off the door handle cap and it’s right there.

My e46 from 2001 had exactly that same key.

I used it to go swimming with the key avoiding letting the original key in the beach. It was pretty useful

valet key is something youre supposed to leave in the car. youre meant to set the car into valet only mode, hand the valet the plastic valet key, and it lets them drive your car but keeps your trunk and hood locked so your personal possessions cant be taken

Yeah you can start the car with it. It just does not have a remote. This has been a thing on all german cars for like 20 years. Had an identical key on a 07 Audi once. Have one on a bmw now.
