I think this little extra scene adds just a little more impact on Anakin character and how Luke now visualizes his father. Ben told him “he was best star pilot in the galaxy” and now this guy is kinda seconding Ben’s statement. Also (even though Lucas didn’t know at the time Vader was Anakin) Luke now has a legacy to live up to. He has “the mighty Skywalker blood” and his dad was a legend has he started to learn. Now going from kinda wanting to be like his father to afraid to end up like his father in ROTJ, it adds just a little bit more depth. In my opinion at least.

Ironically this guy then goes on to be killed by Luke's father right after.

It makes sense that others would talk about anakin here and there, he was a widely known war hero of the galactic republic, really a legend of the clone wars. As people find out he's a Skywalker, itd make sense that they make the association.

This scene should be added back in as part of a extended edition, along with the scenes with Biggs and Luke's other friends.

False. This pilot would not be the second character besides Obi Wan to mention Anakin. Uncle Owen also mentioned Luke’s father.

Biggs character was pretty much left on the editing room floor, I wish they kept more of it his death would have had a bit more impact

The importance of the scene was that it emphasized how much Luke was getting by just on raw talent he inherited from his father (and eventually drawing on the Force). It raises the sense of danger and desperation for Luke, and for the rebels who are sending pretty much anyone with a pulse up on a starfighter.

It would also retroactively make the reveal of Vader being Anakin even better because we see Vader’s skill at flying later (in the tie fighter in the trench)

It would’ve been great to have it be kept in the film. It adds another layer of impact of Anakin’s character and gives Luke the visual appeal of his father before ever knowing who he truly was.

Honestly this doesn't really change much. It just means that guy is in his forties to early fifties.

Yes the majority of the Grand Army of the Republic were clone troopers, but you still had Judicial Forces who became officers in the GAR Navy. This guy could've easily been a young pilot during the clone wars instead of an officer, it just means he never got shot down and was stationed in Obi-Wan and Anankin’s fleet.

Side Note:

This would be a defense for retroactively putting this scene back into the movie today. Back then George Lucas hadn't figured anything out for the prequels.

They missed the oportunity to add a young Garven Dreis to The Clone Wars. I imagine Anakin and the Clones saving Garven Dreis from a Separatist invasion. Inspiring him to become a pilot.

He would have been the third... Luke's aunt and uncle were the first to mention Anakin.

That means he may have grown up with Anakin on tattooine and remembered him as a pod racer
