You’ll always know there’s a welder in the room. How?

He’ll make sure he tells you

I'm 51 years old. I finally decided when I turned 50 it was time to call it a day. My vision and hearing as well as my joints and back are all showing the effects of a 30 plus year career in the welding and heavy fabrication field. I can say despite the issues that have come from that I am as proud as hell to have been a part of it. it was a very rewarding and satisfying way to make a decent living. Kudos to all those still in the trades. Work safe and work smart. God bless you for your contributions to our society. You are very much needed.

Ive been welding for 2 years and finally hit 49k a year, these welding pages and their "youll be rich just come pay us tens of thousands for a tuition first" pages are dumb as fuck.

Being a welder is the tradesman equivalent of having a BMW 😂. Can't stop yapping

The ego’s of welders are definitely higher than their pay!

My father and grandfather were welders. My father is damn near on deaths door and my grandfather died at 50 because of the weilding fumes. My father asked me to not become a welder. I am an electrician.

When I worked at Kaiser, I did disability claims. Half the welders/ship builders at NASCO were on disability by the age of 35.

How to get gen z to be welders. Promise lots of money. And use emojis.

As a welder, there's more negatives than positives to welding, and most welders won't be earning anywhere near 100, 000

Hella money apparently is $22.60 an hour according to bureau of labor statistics

I'm working in robotics with a big startup, welding has max 10 years before its getting replaced by machines. Good side career i guess but definitely not longterm. 10k for a robot that doesnt complain, does your job faster, does the job better, and works 24 hours is tough to compete

100k if you spend 70, 000 dollars on a truck with a bed outfitted for welding, a generator welder, every piece of tooling necessary, and spend months away from home welding pipelines. A travel welder is a single man's job.

I'm a welder/ironworker local 721

Truth is, everything everyone said here is mostly correct. Good pay, good job, interesting work (but not always), most only use a helmet and no respirator, so long term effects on lungs and body is real. I don't care what you say. I see it on a daily basis. But the fact is, welding is important and keeps the world going. Do your own due diligence and work smart, but it still comes to get you after decades of it. That's just the real world truth for the majority of welders that do it for a lifetime. You will get knee and/or hip replacement surgery at some point from it.

Due diligence seems to take a back seat to juvenile chest beating, ego and peer pressure. There are pockets of caring, emotionally healthy, responsible companies/crews, but not nearly enough.

You have to try to get into a good environment where these things are considered and enforced to minimize long term effects. But as you can see from the position this guy is in, you are constantly, for 8-12 hours a day, in these extreme positions.... for the rest of your working life. I don't need to explain the effects of that. His knees will be shot eventually.

Don't forget the cool mask that you wear while welding

My best friends dad just died from the “long term effects” of welding in his 50s… money isn’t everything.
