Just had double jaw surgery and you kept me company in the hospital John! Can’t wait to fall asleep to this, thank you!

Regarding the endurance hunting hypothesis— as well as our brains, an important factor in why modern humans don’t seem to use that tactic as much is the fact that our shoulder construction makes us much better at throwing than even other human species like Neanderthals. This makes tactics like ambush hunting a lot more viable because you can attack from more of a distance with less risk of getting gored or run over by the mammoth you’re trying to hunt.

last time I studied this there were credible theories that the endurance running and brains came as a package. the endurance running was to run down animals that we couldn't beat in a sprint, something like antelope for instance, and one function of the bigger brain was to read the environment; to track the animal pursued, ie to correctly interpret spoor as being caused by a fleeing animal, to infer its path and location from those signs, and possibly to imagine oneself as the animal in order to consider such things as, "where would it have gone next, up that trail or down that valley?" that latter action has also been postulated as a contributor to or possible origin of some of the half-human, half-animal characters seen in many primitive mythologies, rock art etc

That concrete / steel process is staggering. That could be a real game changer. 😲

With regards to the evolution of endurance hunting, I don't think it should be surprising we still have the traits for it. I mean, until just 100-200 years ago, most of us were employed in manual labor. Surely many of the same endurance-related traits that help endurance hunting also help with endurance in any other strenuous activity. Sweating and big, effective lungs will help with running just as much as swinging a hoe 8 hours a day.

Okay, the thought of caffeinated ants put a smile on my face. That research ought to be nominated for an *Ig Nobel Prize*

Yay! Just a note, here in Australia at least, the "i" in "echidna is pronounced like in 'kid'; so "eh-kid-na". I love echidnas - I've come across them a few times while bushwalking, and it's always a happy event. They're so weird!

A lot of people enjoy endurance sports, me one of them. So it doesn't surprise me that we are built for efficiency over speed. Hence a larger brain. We must plan ahead, not charge blindly along.

Scientists: “Why are you running?”
Human: “screeching”
Scientists: “WHY ARE YOU RUNNING?!”

Tsunami could have carried sharks, flatworms, etc., inland. Alternately, flying sharks would likely nest in the trees, so…

At 3:05 you're speaking of ants on caffeine, but how would they do microdosing psilocybin?

I for one am eying the sharks suspiciously. If there was a land shark at some point that is something we should know about.
