Glass lens were an amazing discovery. You could say glass in general as prisms and breaking up by Newton. Galileo used it to study the stars. Microscopes were used by the Greeks 4, 000 years ago, it led to us exploring cells and the explosion in medicine that led to.

I would say the discovery of electricity should be right up there. Following the discovery, the world has advanced more in just the past 200 years than the entire history of humanity before that.
