Depending on the interface you are using there can be a big difference in how good the Asio drivers are coded, but in general you really need to go as low as you posible can on the buffers. a 512 buffersize should be workable on even older slower machines and will theoretically give you around 12ms latency. One thing is theory tho another thing is reality. You have to double this if you are listening/recording at the same time. so 512 buffers will usually give you a turnaround effective latency of around 30ms wich will sound like a small delay and (in my ears) highly annoying when playing sounds live from a software synth as you can clearly hear the sound is startinga little later than the hit of the key.

Workarounds if your pc can't handle too small buffer sizes:

Choose a simple sound when recording the midi track and set the buffer as low as possible. prefearable not higher than 64.
If your PC/audio interface can handle 32 buffers most people won't go nuts about the latency.
You can also use an audio interface that have some onboard zero latency effects for recording live instruments/vocals and set the monitor to pre recording. If you need to listen to something prerecorded tracks while playing/singin these kind of interfaces usually have a "mix" fader/knob to let you mix the pre sound with effects and the post sound from the daw. Its a trade off of. Some like this, some don't.
When you need to mix a butload of tracks at once or just a few very cpu heavy instruments/effects set the latency higher as when you are just listening to some pre-recorded things, latency don't matter.
If you have loads of tracks and you get clicks when mixing you can take very cpu heavy tracks with lots of effects do a mix down of each single heavy tracks to an audio file. This of course removes the ability of editing the effects and so on that track, but will free the cpu to doing other stuff.

Most of the reply gets answered so im hoping to get my answer too. Sir plsss reply i beg u
Glad i found this video, so sir i have a question and i have searched it a lot but didnt get any answer, i am using ableton live lite & rode mic and interface, now i dont have studio headphones and monitors which will required to listen the recording by playing the recorded track. So in the preferences, i choose MME/Directx as it allows to play track directly through your laptop speakers but ASIO dosnt allow you(in ASIO u will need monitors and TRS cable connect with audio interf.). Sir my question is - does recording audio with MME(with mic and audio interf. connected) degrades sound quality? as i have heared MME is windows own sound card so it will use that and might reduce the quality, and Through ASIO it allows audio inerf to work upon. Is there any difference between these two scenarios?

Thanks. But can you help me: I have installed Asio4all and it is in the default folder. Ok, but, I cannot find it in Manager Devices! So, how do I know that the Asiodriver = performing?? I have Grand Orgue as my DAW, there I can set the sample size of the buffer. But, I am not sure if the thing is .. working! Thanks for your support anyhow. J. T.

Question: When I've used the Asio audio interface in DAW, the audio does not work in any browser in windows 10. Why? How can I set up that via ASIO audio interface to work in parallel?
My audio interface is a Solid State Logic SSL2+. The previous interface (Steinberg UR28M) wasn't have this problem. Thank you for your time. Great video !!

Thanks. Does anyone know if there is a way to allow the windows volume slider to still function with ASIO? Since installing ASIO it has fixed issued I had with recording but I would still like to be able to use the volume slider. Currently it's either 0 or 100.

This video was great but the midi and the editing style really gives it a 2012 feel
