The first manned Apollo mission was scheduled for launch on 21 February 1967 at Cape Kennedy Launch Complex 34. However, the death of the prime crew in a command module fire during a practice session on 27 January 1967 put America’s lunar landing program on hold.

The crew consisted of Lt. Colonel Virgil Ivan “Gus” Grissom (USAF), command pilot; Lt. Colonel Edward Higgins White, II (USAF), senior pilot; and Lt. Commander Roger Bruce Chaffee (USN), pilot.

The accident occurred during the Plugs Out Integrated Test. The purpose of this test was to demonstrate all space vehicle systems and operational procedures in as near a flight configuration as practical and to verify systems capability in a simulated launch.

A cry for help, a scream of agony, then static. Terrifying.

I was 9 years old when this happened. I'll never forget it. It was a Friday night and I was watching TV with my mom and dad. A news flash came on the screen and then a man said, "We interrupt this program to bring you a special report" It freaked me out because I was really into the space program. I remember it like it was yesterday.

As someone who was a patient in the burn unit. I know exactly what they were feeling. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

The sounds of people burning up, is an incredibly dreadful sound with a terrible silence that follows and that’s exactly what this video captures

Heartbreaking to hear. This tragic event reminds us of the immense bravery of astronauts and the harsh realities of space exploration. Their legacy continues to inspire and drive our quest for knowledge.

This is like the audio equivalent to "this is so disturbing but I can't stop playing it over and over again".

One screamed we have a bad fire. Then silence. It happened that quick, They only felt pain for a second. Grissom son believes somebody murdered his father.

This has haunted me since I first heard about it in the 70's.

My grandpa was working on the water unit that day. He said there wasn't anything they could do to stop it. He passed away a few years ago but he told me stories about how he was good friends with all the astronauts and before the test flight he had a party with them. It scarred him a lot and was the reason he left working for the Chrysler Space Division.

Grissom almost drowned on his Mercury mission when his capsule landed in the ocean. The capsule prematurely blew open and the capsule started to sink. People thought he panicked and triggered the capsule opening but he was cleared years later and the cause was a defect. After that ironically NASA changed the escape hatch where it could only be opened from the outside.

The information gained from this tragedy was invaluable; It's really unfortunate that they died and it probably wouldn't have been any reassurance to them, but what we learned from this incident probably saved countless lives. We'll never really know.

In a pure oxygen atmosphere, a fire doesn’t merely ignite. It’s more like a detonation.

It’s was an unfortunate accident that exposed how bad the block 1 design was.

1. Hatch that was not easy to open because there were 3 of them. Inner and outer plus the BPC.
2. No protective lockers for storage which exposed items that were flammable under pure oxygen atmosphere.
3. Exposed and faulty wiring and structural material that could burn.
4. Cranking the atmosphere to 14psi at sea level.

Grissom and his crew mates had made several complaints to NA and NASA. The backup crews were also complaining as well.
