You cant breathe if you are engulfed in fire and everything takes a back seat to not being able to breathe even burning pain. That scream is not pain it is sheer horror.

There was a Russian cosmonaut in the Soviet Union (Komarov) whose spacecraft failed at reentry I believe. It was known the craft was not ready so while he was plunging to the ground in an uncontrollable spin he was furiously cursing every Soviet boss he felt was responsible. I think he requested his remains to be exhibited and they were. It was a big piece of burnt and mangled flesh without recognizable human shape. You can see it online.

I was alone in the cockpit of a B747 while being towed when an electrical fire broke out in the center console.
The thing that sticks with me is the speed that things happen (and I wasn't in a 100% oxygen environment) and the lung burning acrid smell of the smoke is like nothing I've ever encountered, it just sucked every ounce of strength from me.
I can't imagine the fear these three men felt being absolutely helpless to do anything.

More information: this happen during a test rehersal that wasnt even supposed to be considered dangerous because the rocket fuel was emptied from the spacecraft.

We did the Apollo 1 crew so wrong.

They voiced concerns about the cockpit being 100 percent oxygen, they voiced concerns over the amount of flammable material, they voiced concerns over the amount of time it took for an emergency egress, they had complaints about the complicated mechanism and tools needed to open the hatch, and nasa was there the whole time saying “it’s fine, I promise, we would never let anything happen to you and besides, we will be right there to help you get out in emergency…

It ended up taking the pad and egress crew over 10 minutes to reach them, they were dead in 30 seconds. The high oxygen environment essentially acted as an incinerator.

Even worse, nasa left their bodies in the spacecraft for over 8 hours so they could “study what went wrong”

It also becomes even more of a messed up story when you realize that either Gus Grissom or Ed White were destined to be the first on the moon, not, Armstrong. In all reality, the Apollo 11 crew probably would have been white, Chaffee and Grissom with white being mission lead, therefore first on the moon.

RIP to all of them.

"Can you egress at this time?" made my heart DROP. They were practically dead before ground control even said it.

this is bone chilling footage. my heart goes out to the crew, and i hope they know that their efforts toward the program paid off.

I recall my parents discussing this fire for years after the tragedy. The funerals were national mourning events.
Grissom and Chaffee were buried at Arlington Cemetery; White was buried at West Point. President Johnson attended all 3 funerals.
I believe NASA Day of Remembrance, which was held on 1/25/24, includes the Apollo1 mission.
Gus Grissom, Roger Chaffee, Ed White:
Ad Astra per Aspera, 1/27/1967.

Imagine training for the mission of your life, to go outer space & dying during a rehearsal launch test. Sheesh

Sad thing is that years later they recovered Gus Grissoms craft to discover he hadn’t blown the hatch, it was a fault not his own. Rest your souls Apollo 1
