Hey I'm a Doctor working in the UK and in this video I react and breakdown Griffith's torture scene from the Berserk anime.
I walk you through Griffith's various injuries as well as their emotional and psychological impacts on Griffith's character from a doctor's perspective. We also explore how this impacts his decision in the Eclipse episode.

Now this show may not be for everyone as the scenes we look at today are quite graphic, so please be warned.

The manga also implied that the torturer repeatedly raped Griffith. "We were like husband and wife" was what he said I think. Which makes it all a lot crueler, and sadly a lot more realistic

From what i remember, the Manga's version of guts killing the torturer was significantly more gruesome.
Guts impaled him through the shoulder in the same way, then cut out his tongue just like he did to griffith, and then watched as he struggled to keep from sliding off of his sword and falling down into the pit of the tower.

The most telling moment is that Griffith has a vision where his looks have healed and he even has a child with Casca who she has named after Guts, and she patiently waits on and feeds his paralized body in a modest home. He rejects this situation with disgust as the Ruins of his Dream and utters the words "I sacrifice."

In the manga, the torturer also gloated about how he cut off Griffith's tongue and turned it into a good luck charm, and when Guts killed him he was left impaled for a solid 30 seconds while Guts cut out his tongue, then dropped him to his death.

Lets not forget that the king was nearly satisfied with his punishment of Griffith when he was preparing to leave the cell. Griffith was stripped of his rank, his band was disbanded and branded as traitors, he had been whipped severely and his hands had been gauged (He had been hanging by a hook through his hands during his whipping)....However Griffith couldnt help himself. He HAD to show that this level of torture wouldnt work on him. So he smiled at the king and questioned if he was truly angry that he (griffith) had bedded his daughter...or was he really just angry that he (the king) hadnt managed to sleep with her first?. THAT is what sent the king into mania and demand Griffith be confined and tortured endlessly with the only caveat that he absolutely must live through it for at least a year.

This is exactly what I’ve always wanted, a doctor analyzing gory anime such as Berserk, while providing insightful and relevant commentary from a biological and physiological standpoint. Great work Doc!

Yes and no, his muscles didn't atrophy, in the manga it's stated the torturer purposely removed his muscles from his arms and thighs intentionally. After they rescued him from the dungeon they had to confront the reality that Griffith will never be physically able to recover and won't be able to be in any kind of normal shape.

You forgot the most important scene, the one right before he took off on the wagon. He overheard what Casca told Guts, for him to forget about her and Griffith and go on and inherit the BotH as it's defacto leader. Even worse, he overheard that Casca and Guts had overheard his entire Fountain speech, and that it was the reason Guts had decided to leave in the first place, and now Guts was using those same words to justify leaving him again and inherit his legacy. All this for the sake of becoming what Griffith said he would consider an equal, and thus a 'real friend'.
Griffith could not tolerate that humiliation. It broke him, he lost everything, and it was his fault.

Ive lost my toenails a few times over the years to injuries. The nail coming off dosent really hurt all that bad, but a few hours later it hurts really bad and continues to hurt. It feels like the pulse of your heart has somehow moved to your toes, like they were stabbed with a ton of needles.

The thing that truly affected Griffith was his Emotional Immaturity and how he clung to his persona too much. He repressed his emotions and when faced with too much emotion, he would use self-harm as a form of coping mechanism. Instead of confronting his emotions, talking about it or coming to terms with it, he just just pretty much bottles it in and uses physical pain to distract himself from his emotional pain.

This is added pretty much by his persona as the Leader of the Band of the Hawk. Because he believes that the leader should be brave, strong, unbeatable, he puts on this act in order for men to follow and believe in him which only further causes him to hide his own weaknesses from others. All of this just combines within him until it eventually breaks which happens during Griffith's second fight against Guts.

When he lost, not only did his persona of the unbeatable commander break in front of the members of the Band of the Hawk but his lost also meant that Guts, the person who he had come to consider as a friend, would leave. This was too much emotional damage that he didn't know how to handle which ed him to become impulsive and sleep with the princess. He didn't sleep with her because he loved her but because he wanted to feel in control and dominant.

This also happened to Guts but managed to overcome it through his emotional talk with Casca. He revealed his pain, talked about things he had also kept inside him and showed vulnerability in front of someone he cared and Casca accepted it. This moment released all his pent up emotions and allowed him to emotionally mature.

In the manga, the torturer told to Guts that he didn't just only took Griffith's tongue, but he also took his eyelids, lips and ripped the muscles of his tighs, arms and forearms.
So i want to ask Doctor if it's at least even possible to cry in that state?

Edit:

saddest part for me is that the entire reason Guts dueled Griffith and left his service in the band of the hawk was to ultimately prove to Griffith that he was worthy of being a friend. its both a bit ironic and sad that Guts trying to be the friend Griffith described caused Griffith to see him with hatred

I like how he's analyzing the anime with passion and as if he's a fan and not some random reactor who knows nothing about the show

While anime torturer got of lightly, Guts did exact a bit more of punishment on the torturer in manga. Unlike his anime counterpart kings torturer in manga was a deformed hunchback, which might somewhat explain why he developed such sadistic tendencies (though by no mean does it excuse it). Anyway Guts make sure to mess up inside of his mouth with a dagger before sending little bastard into the abbyss below. Considering party had limited time before getting caught by king's men I think Guts made the best of the situation.

Yeh, pretty horrific. Seeing how close the antagonist and protagonist of Berserk were and knowing everything they have been through together really separates Berserk from a majority of stories.
