How to Repair Glass Window Panes | Fix It In 15
Показать описание
If you have a window with a single pane of broken glass, don’t worry — Lou is going to help you fix it in 15 minutes.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to remove the old glass and replace it with a new piece so it looks like new.

Before you can fix your window, you have to assess the extent of the damage. In this example, we’re working with a wood frame window and replacing the entire piece of glass within the sash. On some older windows, you may have a series of individual glass panes between each of the muntin bars (also called lites or mullions). You also need to make sure you have the proper tools for the job: putty knife, glazing, new glass, tape measure/ruler, eye protection gloves and some newspaper (more on that later).
Fortunately, this job primarily involves some patience and elbow grease, so it’s something a DIYer would be comfortable with. However, if you don’t feel confident working with glass you can hire a handyperson. If you go that route, you may want to identify a few other jobs around the house to make it a more worthwhile investment.

How to repair a glass window pane:
1. Wear eye protection and gloves–safety never takes a holiday
2. Cover the window with a newspaper before you break any remaining glass in the window
3. Use a putty knife and hammer to chisel away the excess glass and existing glazing (be gentle so as not to damage the frame)
4. Measure the opening and add ⅛”
5. Bring measurements to the hardware or glass store
6. Slide new glass into groove and use putty knife and glazing to keep in place
