Thank you for saying this. I'm not sure that the people who need to hear it are going to, but as a gay man in the US, I am sick and tired of people using what happened in Sodom and Gomorrah as a reason to deny me my rights as a full-fledged member of the country.

Well said, Dan. I heard many sermons on Gen 19 as part of the "gay curse", but when I read it sans commentary, it was just as you described. Only one pastor had the courage to call it for it is as you are.

Sodom’s sin is not about male homosexuality, but their violence against outsiders. Even Jesus made use of the example of Sodom to tell his disciples that if people reject their message and don’t receive them, even Sodom and Gomorrah will end up better than those people on the Judgement Day.

9 Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,
10 Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.
11 And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.

I grew up being taught in my Church and through my parents that homosexuality was the downfall of Sodom and Gomorrah and the Roman Empire 🤪

It's probably akin to someone going into a neighborhood or area where because of race or bigotry they don't like your kind and automatically express it with violence. Not really hard to imagine even today. There are still places like this even today.

Genuine question: how can the _desire_ for "other flesh" be perverse if they believed the visitors were human? In the story, the _desire itself_ was for humans. Does the Enochic tradition explain this?

So about sodom and gomorrah. I pretty much grew up thinking that sodom and gomorrah were two towns, but an accquaintence who was sent both to "jewish school" and a christian seminary said no that's not right. Sodom is the town and gomorrah is something else. (don't remember exactly what) Can you explain where this discrepancy comes from? Or have you heard of it?? I must say that Gomorrah is kind of an afterthought as it is mentioned as bad and destroyed but no one seems to care one way or another.

Even later Jewish commentators did not identify the sin of Sodom with homosexuality. Sanhedrin 109b tells the story of the maiden of Sodom, who dared to give bread to a poor man, a forbidden act. When her deed was discovered, she was covered in honey and chained to the top of the city wall to be devoured by bees, which was connected to the "cry of Sodom" that reached God referenced in Genesis 18:20.
