This is utter nonsense. We do not take material out of the ground, turn it into a product and then throw it away if it has a future use. What has happened for the entirety of the industrial era is that materials that are economic to recycle do get recycled without any intervention from Govt or regulators. We have always had a circular economy. People recycle metals all the time because it makes economic sense. More to the point, people do not 'waste' energy. It costs money.

Recycling things that are not economic to recycle just wastes energy and other scarce resources. Recycling is not an end in itself.

While we are on the subject, what part of the circular economy is sailing around the World? That uses resources and has no discernible benefit other than fulfilling a personal challenge.

Current monetary system is not circular. Fiat currencies are being printed by bilions and incentivise endless manufacturing of valueless products. There must be incentive in the economy to create value, not to extract cash from consumers.

The government should start with something "small", they should force ALL coffee chains to require customers to bring their own coffee cup if they order their drink to go, or else they will need to pay for a reusable coffee cup from the coffee chain. I am sure all these big coffee chains will have no problem selling their own brand of reusable coffee mugs. If society can't cooperate and accomplish something so simple, we can't get a single thing done.

I think the best alternative for our future will be when our alien brothers come in and take off the trash and dissolve it however they do it with their advanced techniques. That will start off the economy well, then the replicators, etc. etc. Oh well, more imaginative thinking!
