Ellen MacArthur begins her address at AIB's Sustainability Conference by introducing the concept of the Circular Economy.
She tells us about her time as a world record breaking solo long-distance sailor, packing up to leave shore for long periods of time and knowing that there is little room for error in what you bring on these trips down to the last packet of food.
This experience in being conscious of the meaning of the word 'finite' inspired her to look at applying this principle to the global economy. We are all reliant on finite resources, and irresponsible management of these resources threatens the future of humanity.
She invites us to move away from a linear economy full of waste, and instead look to the Circular Economy. In this model, you design out waste and pollution, you keep what you produce in use for as long as possible, and at the end of the product's life, you strive to get the value back out in the best way you possibly can.
Ellen also gives the rationale behind this economic model producing more profitability across a range of sectors, creating a win-win situation for businesses and customers alike.
