At this point Intel should ditch Intel

How many of you are here after Apple announced that it is ditching Intel

AMD: spanks Intel with new CPUs
Apple: Ditches Intel so they can make their own CPUs
Nvidia: It's our turn now

The transition to Intel didn't happen in the 9-10 change: it was near the end of 10.4 after most apps had made the switch.

An iMac and MacBook with those Ryzen 4000 Mobile CPUs would be incredible

Fact Check:

OS X - Released in 2001 (on PowerPC hardware)
PowerPC-> Intel transition 2005 ( during 10.5)

So they're not ditching Intel completely yet...just on the MacBook Air.

Uhhh someone tell Alex that the Intel transition didn’t happen until years after OS X came out. It was built and released for PowerPC from the beginning.

Knowing Apple they would probably force developers to optimise and recompile their apps for ARM. I guess it's kinda going to benefit Windows 10 on ARM.

I feel like they dropped the Mac Pro now specifically to avoid screwing pros over. Drop one last big boy machine with Intel tech right before they start the transition to the new tech, allowing for pro users to continue using that old tech with the best hardware possible for years.

Small prediction:
Mac Pro and MBP will remain x86 (or the MBP will at least have an x86 variant) for a while longer as "the thing you use for compatibility", or in the Mac Pro sense "what you use to make apps for Mac on ARM". It'll be the "workhorse" while the MacBook/MacMini will transition quicker and be more "consumer/prosumer"-oriented. If anything it'd be a slow growth "from the base up".

Fun fact that no one asked for:kalamata is a city in Greece :D

Alex's statements don't make sense, Macs that shipped in that time frame came with Mac OS X. They continued to update PowerPC Macs until 10.5 according to wikipedia.

The A12X has 4000+ multi core geekbench score. The 9880h which is the 'most popular' MacBook pro 16 CPU has about 6500. So it's not that they're that far away in performance. The software will be a pain, but Microsoft is doing the same with their Surface laptops using custom ARM silicon (modified snapdragon 8CX chips). This is the way we're going anyways.

I don't necessarily see them as 10 years away from being able to do mac pro performance from their chips. That's really just a matter of scaling them up by adding cores and running them with more power, not easy but if they have the engineers to build their world-beating chips in the first place I don't see them struggling with "make it bigger". There's also the wrinkle that a bunch of devs are going to jump at ARM macbooks b/c they'll be MUCH faster at doing builds of ARM-native software, which has been slowly gaining in popularity as AWS and others have made ARM instances available in the cloud at sometimes significant cost savings compared with x-86 platforms.

Mac Pro will be like the way the G5 tower Power PC went

If they really bring out this in 2022, I’d give a maximum of 3 years for a full move, including the Mac Pro. For one thing, apps written in swift are already mostly cross architecture and Apple has been pushing this for a while. They start on the bottom and as the developers update more complex apps they can transition the pro lineup as well.

There was another rumor that they were testing AMD cpu. Could be the start of a cheaper Macs.

Alex had no idea what he was saying. Apple released OS X YEARS before going to intel. They went intel in 2005, after Motorola couldn't upgrade the G5. OS9 was around for G3 processors. There were two generations of processors between OSX being released and the switch to Intel.
